I am also a former owner of an m550 and it was an awesome car. I upgrade to a F90C a couple years ago. For the 550e, it is impressive and keeps weight under 5000lb, so it is quite a bit lighter than the G90. But it is quite slow even compared to the m550. I saw the 550e is 0-200kph at 15.25s, the m550 did that in 12s. So, it looks like a very capable business sedan but not a sports car.

Its a 10.3s car from 100-200 and 4.8 0-100

I mean thats plenty quick.

We have become spoiled to the point that doesnt seem quick, but in reality its practically E60 M5 quick.

21,400 thousand euros in what grand total, if its 79 thousands euros to 100k, then yeah I would go for the 550e.

If its 21k in a context of 200+k euros, than I would opt for the M5.

For me it depends on a number of aspects.

My thoughts:

This is going to be the 996 generation of the m5. Porsche’s first attempt at a liquid cooled 911 has been the red headed step child of the 911 for 20+ years. It was just a bad car, all around.

The good news; the next gen m5 will probably follow the 997 911, a great car all around and the prior gen (F90) will appreciate significantly, just like 993 911s.

The bad news; the G90 m5 is just a bad car. It’s the transition generation, a step in the right direction but unfortunately the sacrificial lamb in the evolution of the m5.

Of course just my opinion. I’ve got a F90 m5cs…and absolutely love it. I’m sure BMW will learn and course correct, I’m a lifelong BMW fan and will continue to support the brand.

I don't know. I like the way it looks and don't mind the hybrid drivetrain. It's just crazy to me that an armored humvee weighs less than this car.

Having checked:

About €137k (US$150k) for the M5 in the standard load out

550e, with equivalent features is €116k (US$127k).

The F90 obviously is light, but the i5 is 200lb lighter than the G90. The XM is 500 lb heavier. Just interesting to see where the G90 numbers end up. The 0-60 will likely be 3.2-3.4s but the 0-200kph may be closer to 11s.
Your numbers on the G90 are wrong.
They’re quoting 10.9 in the marketing pitches which are usually improved upon on real World.

Remember, nobody’s really driven it yet but the G90 was laying down impressive numbers at Goodwood last weekend beating lots of other cars in the hill climb as stated at the end of this YouTube video:

I think the G90 M5 will be great for daily use, but the point is that if you want a PHEV BMW for daily use get a 550e, it makes far more sense and its definitely fast and 300kg lighter lol. I drove a X5 50e extensively and believe me when I say this, its pretty close to the X5M from previous gen

The M5 is supposed to feel special, to be different in terms of handling and driving feel. I am not sure that will be achieved with its weight. I feel like a 550e is far better compromise and jack of all trades.

I like the idea of a V8 with hybrid assistance but I would have preferred a far less hefty solution.
The prices are too close in my market to even contemplate 550e Vs M5.

The new model may be fatter and slower, but the looks are strictly in the eyes of the beholder and I think the new car's look is FIRE

The cars are within spitting distance of measurement, weight and power. This is the comparison. Not how they are finished. Yes, the Panamera is more expensively trimmed and can be had with fancier suspension. Oh, I should say, the Turbo Hybrid comes with standard air suspension which makes the steel sprung G90 look even more bloated.

But it's not like they are in different classes. The Panamera was always billed as an S class but it only was S class in price, not in space. Having been a Porsche owner for over a decade now, I've had plenty of Panamera loaners and driven a few Turbos (no Turbo Hybrid, cannot compare) but I do own a Cayenne Hybrid so I know how their hybrid tech is calibrated and it is not a big car. In fact, I think my M3 trumps it on rear seat room. Honestly. Besides, as lovely of a platform as the Panamera is, I don't think the G90 is going to be some poor relation. I've not driven the current 5 but given the way my G80 drives, I don't think you'd drive the Panamera and the G90 back to back and say "the G90 clearly doesn't belong here".

So "makes no sense" from a market and price point perspective, but makes every bit of sense from an engineering perspective. Which, when discussing weight, is the point of the discussion. And more to the point, my post was in response to those who have said "Porsche has figured out a way to do it 1,000 lbs lighter". Uh, no, clearly they have not.
You're right, the Panamera, if anything, is superior to the S-Class. It's a vastly superior platform to anything BMW or Mercedes-Benz are currently producing. This isn't a debate, it's beyond ridiculous to compare the two. Laughable, really.
