Really an M5?

After seeing so many reviews about the new M5. It seems the name M5 is purely marketing.

This new G90 “M5” sure seems more like it should have been named the M560e.

Here’s my question. How is it is possibe for Porsche to sell a New Panamera with just a V8 and BMW says they can’t with the new 5-series/M5 due to European emissions regulations? 🤨

I think I may wait and see what the E63 is. Suspect it will be similar to the M5 but atleast look better imo.
Almost seems tuning a 540 would be a better sports sedan than the M5

With all the problems with mercedes recently and how the market is i do not think the e63 will be better
If they do an e 63 e performance then it may be faster but it will probably 200k (not close to the M5 price)

Mercedes is pretty much a disaster right now... you gotta be doing a lot of stuff wrong to be ranked worst or second worst overall brand for reliability by Consumer Reports two years in a row. Reading owner reviews of the new hybrid C63 are also real ugly, a bunch of broken shop queens. Hopefully the G90 fares better.

Doubt it would look better. Mercedes designs has been questionable for awhile now. The only attractive car in their line up now is the new AMG SL and GT Coupes.

Also I suspect the next E63 will cost way more than a loaded M5. This is usually the case when you compare M cars with AMG.

You are going to have to do a lot of modifications to get a 540 to even get to the starting point of a M5 reliably.

BMW & Mercedes are at a pickle. The previous Euro regulations were far more strict and the M5 and latest AMGs were planned with that in mind. As they knew, ditching the ICE engine was too much of a step for customers to handle at first, they chose this half-baked, half-assed Hybrid ICE + Electric approach. I would have honestly prefered a less heavy, dynamically capable - electric M5, to this.

Then as a consequence, these cars to "keep the V8", were turned into heavy weight, bloated, compromised hybrids, that don't really work as a sports cars (due to weight), aren't efficient (because they are too freaking heavy), and aren't fun as well.

Then to keep prices and accounting happy, they completely butchered the interior quality and materials. I have not driven the G90 but I have seen one of the demos here in the factory, and its 2-3 cuts below the F90 in terms of materials and interior quality.

I have a strong feeling a conventional 5er, even a G30 5er, is likely going to be pretty close to driving dynamics to this new M5, due to its mass, and this is sad. I have a G30 540i M Sport (my son's car) and a F90 M5 Competition, and I love both whole heartedly - and while I do think the G30 540i is brilliant to drive (handles beautifully, its very good dynamically) - its no where near the dynamic capabilities of the M5. This is a sad day for a M5 fan.

True. Their E53 with options is around $115k for 5-10 more you can have a fully loaded M5.

I’d suspect the E63 will be $150k or with options

Given the genormous weight difference, the fact the B58 is a masterpiece, and that you can get all the chassis gubbins in the 540i, I don't doubt a G60 540i with performance enhancements can actually be an engaging drive that is at least 85% of the dynamics and fun of the G90 M5, and that is sad

I think the main disappointment is the drop in luxury/quality. The M5 seats don't have side bolster adjustment. No full leather. They don't have soft close doors. The stereo is downgraded. Does it still have seat massage?

Now that the weight is the same as a full size sedan like Merc S class or Audi S8, both of which are more luxurious and comfortable, I'm not sure I see the logic to getting the M5. It's about the same price, but the Merc and Audi have more features and a lot more seating and trunk room.

Agree with your points but if you, want a merc with same power and better luxury you are talking 200k car like the s63e performance
What bmw did with the M5 is kept it as a bargain car in it is category by doing some luxury downgrades
Yes it is more like M560e car then M5 but do you have any better options for this proce point?! NOT REALLY

An m560e would have a b58 six cylinder and hybrid as in the m760e.

They were supposed to launch one but instead we got the 550e.

So this one is an M5e.

Why not release a pure v8 for some markets and the hybrid v8 for others, or offer the choice?

Porsche doesn't sell the v8 only in all markets...

Just as bmw doesn't sell the diesel in all markets.

Bmw developed the hybrid b58 to fill this gap for certain markets.

Could the 4.4 fit and if they sold it would it sell ...hell yes..but it may not sell enough to justify production of it.

I was hoping (knowing it would never happen) they would revitalize a V10 and go out with a bang before the electrification of the M5.

Imagine a high reving V10 say 850bhp screaming down the road.

Perhaps someone should tell all the European car companies that they sell more cars outside of Europe and it's worth making two versions of their performance cars, or if they're going to sacrifice one, let it be the European version.

Production costs - not worth it. Knowing that they made the same rear diffuser for both US And EU tells a lot. And why it looks like that - US regulations.
