Leasing and break-in period for G90 M5

The manual indicates for the first 600 miles the car shouldn’t rev above 5000 and shouldn’t go faster than 106. Obviously I plan to mostly stick to this for the health of the car, but for leased cars, is there extra scrutiny? Will you get in trouble if you rev up to 7000?

Asking for a friend…

There is not extra scrutiny on leased cars. Just make sure you do the 1200 mile service on time, and there's no issue. The break-in period is just a guideline.

That said, don't be a retard and use launch control before the first service. Although, if I had to guess I would say 90% of BMW M owners use up their launch counter in the first 500 miles anyway. They are the most abused cars on the road. That's why I will never buy a used BMW M.

A real car enthusiast never abuses car during brake-in service and always follow the maintenance recommendation.
Having said that for all BMW high performance car I have ever leased, never used LC in brake-in period and never filled tank with gas less than 91 grade recommended by BMW.

Fully agree - I even minimize wear of comfort features where possible. Unfortunately my brother didnt follow instructions and may have revved higher than 5000 (then i may have yelled at him from passenger seat) - but was worried this would create issues for me down the road when doing the 1200 service, etc.

I would never buy a used performance car precisely because I don’t trust how others treat the car, and it’s difficult to know how the owner has treated her.

That said… wish it was easier to tell…. I BABIED my previous Model S (full PPF, minimal use of wearable parts at home, full break-in following)….. yet it made NO difference when I sold her… sad.

I think you guys (and myself) are the exception, not the rule. I will always assume that a BMW M model has been abused by the original owner. Driven hard, probably tuned, and launch counter used up.

I never used launch control one time on my F90. Never saw the point, it was plenty fast enough.

I left a note for the new owner telling him how lucky he was to have a used M5 that wasn't abused. I actually know the current owner now, met him at Cars n Coffee. Really nice guy, and he is taking good care of the car. Although, when I see someone else driving my car it feels like they stole my puppy.

You can but it's advised not too... they put a break in oil that isn't designed for high rpm..high heat use.

A few times it should be fine but going ham they will know via the black box and your warranty could be canceled even on a lease. Now, what that looks likes on a lease IDK. But your required to return the car in working condition as per the contract.

Once the break in done your good. Also, make sure your running the V8 and not doing a ton of miles in EV mode as the ICE side needs the break in vs the EV side.

What do you mean launch counter ? Is there a set number of launches the car can do?

Yes. The transmission can only handle so many launches and therefore BMW puts a launch counter on the cars to prevent over-use. Unless you tune the car you can only do a set number of launches. I think it might be 100-150 total, but I'm not 100% certain on that. Someone else here might know the actual limit.

Lease or Buy I treat my cars exactly the same way. Observe proper break in, warm up before driving spiritedly, highest octane fuel available and 5K oil changes. Its just something that is permanently ingrained in me. The thought process is this will give me the best ownership experience regardless if its 3 years or more.

I saw a thread on the F90 forum awhile back where those that exceeded 100 launch control launches that they noticed the transmission didn't shift as hard/fast afterwards. The theory was it was protecting the internal clutches after it reached the max number of launches. I think it still let you use LC but just wasn't as violent/aggressive. No proof if that is actually a thing though. I don't like to abuse my cars so wasn't something I would ever run into.

They put a limit i think around 100 launches
I personally experienced it with my first M8 and it is true
The car still does launch control and everything looks normal and the same it is just the shift sound between 1rt and 2nd gear changes and become less smooth and the car loses 1 to 2 tench of a second from 0 to 60
I draggy tested this multiple time and this is actually true
My current M8 i dont launch it at all lol (not intersted anynore)
I am not sure if g90 m5 will have the same limit
