Why we Love & Hate our New G90 M5 *Video*

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
After getting our hands on the new G90 M5 a couple of weeks ago we share our honest thoughts on the car, highlighting both it's strengths and weaknesses.

Love:
  • Hybrid powertrain: The combination of a V8 engine and electric motors delivers instant power and impressive speed.
  • Interior: The cabin boasts a large LED light bar, customisable ambient lighting, and a 360-degree camera.
  • XDrive system: The rear-wheel-drive biased all-wheel-drive system offers excellent handling and the ability to switch to 100% rear-wheel drive for smoky burnouts.
  • Aggressive styling: The G90 M5 boasts a more striking and assertive design compared to its predecessor, the F90 M5.
  • Advanced technology: The car comes standard with a high-end Bowers & Wilkins sound system and offers various driver-assistance features that can be activated through the BMW app.
  • Reasonable pricing: Considering its performance and features, the G90 M5 is competitively priced compared to its predecessor and rivals like the Audi RS6.

Don't like:
  • Staggered wheel setup: The use of 21-inch wheels in the front and 20-inch wheels in the rear creates an awkward and visually unappealing look.
  • Large wheel arch gaps: The car's ride height appears excessively high, leaving ample space between the tyres and the fenders.
  • Unimpressive rear spoiler: The small and unassuming spoiler seems out of place on a high-performance car like the M5.
  • Controversial light-up grille: The illuminated kidney grilles are a polarising design element that some may find excessive or gaudy.
  • Heavy weight: The G90 M5's substantial weight is noticeable during braking and cornering, potentially affecting its agility and handling.

Modifications:

We wasted no time in making the G90 M5 our own, starting with a few cosmetic upgrades:
  • Carbon fibre rear spoiler: We replaced the factory colour coded spoiler with a more aggressive carbon fibre piece.
  • Carbon fibre mirror covers: The standard mirror caps were swapped out for carbon fibre replacements.

Future plans:

We have ambitious plans for further modifications, including:
  • Full Carbon Fibre styling kit (see our preview in the video).
  • Wheel spacers & Lowering: To address the excessive wheel gap and improve the car's stance.
  • Intake system: An Eventuri intake is in development to enhance the V8 engine's sound and performance.
  • Exhaust system: A Milltek exhaust system is on the horizon to unleash the full sound potential of the V8 engine.

Overall:

We are very impressed with the G90 M5's performance, technology, and luxury, but as with all BMW's see room for improvement in its styling and handling. Reviewing the tuning companies out there already pushing the capabilities of the G90's S68. We predict this will be the greatest platform for enthusiasts looking for the ultimate well rounded super saloon.

We will keep posted on here but for more frequent updates subscribe to our Youtube channel or follow us on socials. We have ongoing modifications to make this already impressive car even more desirable and exciting.

Thanks for posting; great video. I’ve watched some content you guys have done recently, and I dig it. Really well done and I like that y’all are having some fun too.

I promise I did not screenshot the future state image. I also promise I have not looked at it 25 times already. This car is pretty sick stock; modded a bit it’s gonna be incredible…I think.

Thank you very much, we can't wait to get our kit developed and fitted to our G90. Combined with an aggressive stance will give this gen the most presence of any M5.

Nice short and to the point review.

What about interior build quality, is it as bad as people say ?

The interior quality does not reflect the price you pay for the car. Better than a stock G80 M3 but not as good as a G80 M3 with extended leather in our opinion.

Interior Quality

My wife and I went to our local BMW store to check out the new M5. She was going to buy a 2025 X6M but decided to hold off until 2026. I was fully prepared to pull the trigger on a new M5 but wanted to see it in person. Admittedly I haven’t driven it yet, but my initial impressions are not good. While I think the exterior is better looking in person, the interior is not great. It’s really cheap looking and is not nearly as nice as the X6M my wife is looking at. I’m hoping it grows on me, but in the category of ‘you never get a second chance to make a first impression’, I’m not at all impresssed.

I think you meant 20- Inch wheels in the front and 21-inch in the rear.

I wonder if the stock 21-inch wheel would fit in the front??

I saw that and was going to make the same comment. Pretty sure mine has 20s in front and 21s in rear. I got the PZeros

I don’t understand why M continues without the square (wheel) setup which looks so much better. If they want to argue that turn in is sharper… well, that ship has sailed

There is a lot to 'love' about the G90 . . . but that interior dash/display is despicable

The M5 has taller tires in the front than my X5 with 21” wheels. Not by much but 275*40=110mm vs the M5 285*40=114mm.

Combined with the wheel gap the front looks more like an SUV than the X5.

They could at least offer a 4 wheel setup which has the same diameter.

Well, if you look at a popular performance oriented SUV - Macan GTS - the G90 is longer, wider and a LOT heaver . . . if you lower the Macan GTS air suspension with a push of a button, they are just about the same height.

So, probably good reason why the G90 reminds you of an SUV

For the record, I really like the way G90 looks . . . but would rather own an actual SUV at this juncture

Agreed completely. iDrive 8 is simply garbage. And taking away the shifter on an M car is WILD, and not in a good way.

Phenomenal comparison. I would be willing to bet some SAV’s have better gas mileage too unless someone is chillin in EV mode most of the time. The x5 M60 would be my choice- plenty of power, less complexity, more luxury, more practicality, and decent gas mileage.

Styling is subjective, so won’t comment on it, but this car is no faster than the previous gen competition. Wasn’t the F90 much quicker than F10 and F10 and E39 before it? Isn’t that also the case for the M3/4 generations?
The power numbers are great but the car isn’t any faster. That’s more important to me than EV/ttch.

These are all steps towards a Tesla like interior (big screen in the middle and minimal buttons and levers). It saves a lot of money and this is the direction bmw wants to go.

It is indeed quicker than F90 by every possible metric.

Not the 100-200 metrics I’ve seen. I’m unimpressed by the numbers, but I’m sure the comp will rectify that.

Out of curiosity, where are you getting this info from?

Definitely far more Pros than Cons for me.

The G90 is far and above it's predecesor. Particularly with Styling and Size and Technology.

Probably shouldn’t look at any new Porsche then either, my 9Y0.2 Cayenne and Taycan are full of screens, the Taycan had zero buttons (just a few on the steering wheel). The 992.2 911 is a very similar set up. All manufacturers are going full digital, mostly because it is cheaper and people demand tech in their vehicles.

Per the BMWUSA.com site, G90/G99 runs operating system 8.5.
