Gas Cover Release

Waiting on my wife in my garage admiring my new car and thought to open the charge cover and the gas cover. Charge cover opened like every other car I’ve ever had. Gas cover wouldn’t open by pressing the cover. Pressed everywhere. Thought maybe it was broken but the car came with a full tank of gas so it had to have been open before.
Come to find out there’s a gas release button on the left side of the dash?! Why is this an option and what happens when that button doesn’t release for some unknown reason?

Is it a hybrid thing? Cause some dummy will try to stick the nozzle in the charge port?

Why isn’t it just every other car I’ve had where you press the cover and it releases and you press again and it shuts?

During my test drive they explained to me you had to press the dash button to de-energize the car for the fuel and plug doors to open

One of the reviewers said because it’s pressurized so you can’t just open it.

Thanks Trev and Alan.

Did they say whether there’s a failsafe in case the button doesn’t work?

My wife has a Lexus PHEV that operates the same. The charger door is opening by just pushing it, but to open the fuel door you have to push a button on the dash.

The evap system is sealed in vehicles that are capable of driving in electric only mode. The system can pressurize with changes in temperature so the system needs to depressurize before opening up, otherwise fuel vapors could escape which would violate the emissions requirements.

In cars where an ICE is constantly running, the fuel vapors are purged in to the ICE and burned.

Thanks for dumbing it down for me - much appreciated. Had zero idea.

Now my only remaining question is whether there’s a fail safe. May have to ask the dealer at 1200 miles.

Thanks all

I’d bet there is a manual handle in the trunk
