Just hit the magical 932 miles (1500 KM) and had my first pulls to redline - it’s hard to accurately describe the insanity of the sound, because that’s what it feels like. Very very cool.

I think this video does a good job capturing how it feels, albeit in a 4 RS.

I just don't see the fun in it. There's no driving skill involved.

That video does no justice to the GT4 RS, OP.

It’s the sound they’re highlighting - and getting the car to move well on launch control does take some skill. I just thought it captured the reactions well of people who aren’t used to / familiar with the intensity and uniqueness of the experience in the cabin.

That “shit eating grin” is surely what I looked like a few days ago when I got to Jase launch control and go to 9000 RPM for the first time.

Congrats to you on what I am guessing is an AMAZING car. Wish I could afford it as it would be my dream convertible. Awesome work on the msrp part- do you have a dealer relationship or something or why do you think they sold it at msrp when they could have easily added $ on top?

It was my fourth car with the dealership since 2014. A 981 CS, 981 BGTS, 718 Spyder and now the Spyder RS. But nowhere near how often some guys swap out of cars. Same SA - good guy who loves cars (and bikes, as we both have Ducatis). I think there’s a sense of loyalty with him and myself, and that has always helped.

Another thing that seems to matter to them is that I always bring the car back to resell when I am getting whatever is next - so it’s sort of like a “2 for 1” situation if that makes sense, in that the returning car can be sold at a premium and so the new one is at MSRP.

Really? It'd be one thing if it was a 4 cylinder or electric, but you seriously get no joy out of a high revving and NA screamer?

With lauch control and a dual-clutch automatic, nah. I have to say that engine sounds a lot like a late 1990's Honda F6 Valkyrie. Probably much louder of course but the same tone.

I will say that there's some "art" to it, if that makes sense - I have found that you've got to feather the throttle to get the best result, and I am definitely not great at doing it consistently, at least not yet.

I did the same. Going from a 718 GT4 to a 4RS when the chance came.

From what AP has mentioned about how the GT4RS and Spyder RS came about, it was basically a skunk works type car originally. There is a 981 GT4 w/ GT3 engine test mule around. Then when the GT3 updates came, they made sure to rework the dry sump system so the engine would fit properly into the 982 Cayman/Boxster cars.

Skunk works are the best. The timing wasn't right ~14 years ago for me to get into a 1M, which is why we ended up getting the F87 and G87.

This is more of a swan song, as opposed to kick-starting a segment, but I will take it.

The experience is insane - I hope you either have a path or find one into a 4RS. One of a kind, both the hardtop and the vert.

I had to look it up - I didn't even know that was a bike.

I can see what you're saying, but I am not sure they're all that close - the caveat being that I've obviously never ridden or heard the bike in person.

The unique thing about the 718 RS cars is that the noise (for me, anyway, and after ~1100 miles) is noticeable on this sort of scale: intakes --> exhaust --> anything else. You can hear the engine when you're driving around the neighborhood, but honestly it makes all sorts of sounds that make me wonder if something is broken. My understanding is that these are distinguishing characteristics of both the GT3 engine and an RS product.

I've been playing around with the exhaust flaps (had been keeping them closed), and I can see how the exhaust sound can fit into the overall sound picture in a positive way. The stock system isn't awesome but I think it's better than what was in my 718 Spyder.

But the intakes dominate, especially as you climb the rev range - have you beein in a 4RS or SRS? I think it is something you have to see / feel / hear yourself to understand.

I haven't driven one, but I've heard that unless they're on a track they're pretty lackluster. I think that may depend a person's particular commute. I'd certainly jump at the chance to see for myself.

Definitely go drive one - I have a Golf R for daily duties, and the SRS is purely for dedicated fun drives. We have a lot of nicely paved interstate options in the DFW area, with ramps, long and looping areas to turn around in, etc. and the car is a ton of fun (for me) in those instances.

I've heard from a few fellow owners that back roads are the best - don't have too much of that close by, but Texas Hill Country is in the cards for the spring.

the other thing to remember is that the PDK has been reworked for the RS cars, and the gears have been shortened. So you can go up and down 2nd, 3rd, and 4th without getting too crazy from a speed perspective. You spend a lot of time in the 4-6K RPM range, and it's really nice....I shift a lot more in the SRS, compared to the standard Spyder. I find it all the more enjoyable as a result.

The long gearing drives me nuts, on my 997, hustling it, and I mean hustling..... rarely get past 3rd gear and only select between 2nd and 3rd and back. It's ridiculous for a sports car.

My GT3 sounded like a bucket of bolts rattling around at low speeds. They just make weird sounds.

The manual GT4 / Spyder had or have similar feedback. I think you can do ~80+ in second gear.

The PDK had slightly shorter ratios in my standard Spyder, but the PDK in the RS is shorter still. It’s definitely better in my opinion - you get to experience the up and down shifts more often, which is great.

Absolutely insane car and congrats on the pick up. I am interested in Porsche however I was asked by my business partner not to drive into the office everyday in one because our "team" could get the wrong idea. I guess he does not want them thinking we are making "too much" which we are not.

Either way I will watch from here until my time comes.

When I sell out I will be in the dealership the same day starting with something like a base 911 or the 2016 era GT4. We all love Porsche here for the most part and respect your choice. Don't forget to update us with pictures if you get any mods we want to see and hear

The GT3 engine is designed to be revved out. Don't forget, that entire fiasco with the 991.1 GT3 had mainly to do with engines not being driven hard enough, oddly. From what I know about that whole thing, you don't rev the engine out enough, the oil doesn't circulate properly and ends up with the problems. They did completely fix the problem/redesigned w/ .2.

Low revs, low RPM, the GT3 engine just sound like it is broken or something is loose. The engine just really don't like being at low RPM. Self shift and keep the engine at least above 3k and rev out to about 5 to 6 should do it for most owners. It is far easier with the GT4RS and SRS because of the lower gear ratio, it would be harder with the GT3/GT3RS due to their taller gearing (aka you be speeeeding).

1999 - 2001 Valkyrie has 6 velocity stacks in the plenum box right under the fuel tank, 20 inches from you ears. It has 6 carburetors. The exhaust are true 6 into 6 and exit 40 inches from your ear. The engine has a timing belt, so you get some belt whine, sort of like a supercharger belt whine. It's just 1.6L, so the volume is not huge, but the tone sounds the same as the shit eating grin video.
