PLEASE, when BMW sends you correspondence asking what you love/hate about the new design, again PLEASE, consider the following, as I’ve been in a new 2025 X5 loaner from the dealer and have many complaints. Here are the most disappointing:

1) Transmission/gear shifter: I don’t know who on Earth thought replacing the traditional ‘stick’ with a push button selector would be preferred and/or better, but the daily use of the selector is absolutely awful. The number of times having to click back and forth or having to correct a click that was not intended is terrible. Additionally, by removing the stick, you no longer have the ability to manually shift with the stick, and that’s a big deal when turning and wanting to shift while the wheel is at an angle where you’re unable to use the paddles. What were the engineers thinking?! Plus, don’t you miss having something to hold onto than having your hand dangle aimlessly, or worse accidentally brushing up against those annoyingly soft touch shortcuts that will then pop up on the ridiculously large touchscreen?; and

2) The touchscreen iDrive whatever it is now: again, why are the engineers making simple functions like turning the temperature up/down so difficult by having to tap-tap-tap one degree at a time to change the temperature? That also requires you to stretch forward where previously it’s a quick turn of a button! Also, the new air vent design SUCKS; it simply does not allow the same range of air flow as the previous traditional design of the past 40+ years.;

3) The PC-like touchscreen with a [...]
While I hear what you’re saying, am I right in understanding that you want people that actually have an M5 to complain to BMW about your laundry list of complaints that are based from your experience with an X5 loaner? Not even from you actually having any extended time with a G90 yourself?

That’s an interesting and bold ask.

I appreciate all those items you mention. I was cross shopping the M5 with the M8C/B8/M850iGC and arguably they are the last and most beautiful examples of BMW styling in their current lineup, with perhaps the perfect blend of tech and traditional function. But I still ended up choosing the M5 and there are very well considered reasons why (which I won’t go into here).

The point is, the people buying the G90 do so because they like it and have reasons to do so, and aren’t likely to use their survey power to complain on behalf of your misgivings on the X5.

Thank you for the reply! And yes, I am asking that. The X5 interior and the few -of many many more- issues I referenced apply to the M5 too as the interior technology and placement is practically identical, save for a few extra buttons on the console and likely myriad of additional icons on the screen. It just makes no sense ergonomically. I respectfully disagree that my misgivings are not shared by the majority. Finally, I’m sorry to hear you chose an M5 over any of the current 8 series.
