M3/M4 Coupe Generations Drag Race - E46, E92, F82, G82 [Carwow]

How’s this for a BMW line-up!

We’ve got our hands on the new G82 M4 CS, and it’s lining up against the F82 M4 CS, the E92 M3, and the E46 M3! The question is, will it be an easy win for the newest car? Let’s take a closer look at the stats.

The new M4 CS is powered by a 3-litre twin-turbo straight-six that produces 551hp and 650Nm. This power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox, and the car weighs in at 1,760kg. As new, it costs around £120,000.

The F82 M4 CS is also powered by a 3-litre twin-turbo straight-six. It puts down 460hp and 600Nm, with this power being sent to the rear wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox. It tips the scales at 1,580kg, and when new it costs around £89,000.

The E92 M3 packs a glorious 4-litre naturally-aspirated V8 under the bonnet, and this creates 420hp and 400Nm. Power is sent to the rear wheels only via a 7-speed dual-clutch, and it weighs in at 1,600kg. As new, the E92 cost around £55,000 when it was released.

Finally, we have the E46 M3. It creates 343hp and 365Nm from its 3.2-litre naturally-aspirated V6. This power is sent to the rear wheels via a 6-speed automated manual, and as you’d expect, it’s the lightest car here at 1,495kg. When new, it cost £42,000.

So the new car has a clear advantage on paper, but will it snatch the win? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

In ... before the grill, weight, transmission complaints.

11.1- unprepped and in the moment.

All amazing cars in their time (I have had all of them in some sort of version).

I cant seem to find a pic of my E46 in Steel Gray (or was it Grey)

Another amazing point is the previous gen M4 CS was about $112K in 2019, which is $140K in 2025. So the cost of purchasing is lower, more tech, and more performance every where. This is pretty amazing!

I feel like Matt has to win and this whole channel is about him have the most superior car so he can consistently win races… but he disguises it with “comparing them” 😂

140 in 2025 is probably cheaper than 112 in 2019 lol

I have the F82 M4 Comp (‘16), only 30K miles. I’ve never considered a new one just because of the grill, but they might be growing on me. Idk, I’m old school and just can’t get into new cars for some reason. My dealer has the new one I just looked at while getting a service … But probably not gonna consider it lol.

The sound of the E92 is simply thrilling, followed by the E46. Like Vic, I've owned all 4 cars at some point (none as CS though) and love them all in their own way, with the F80 probably coming last all things considered (although I've owned it the longest).

The G82 is just on another league in terms of performance. With the X-drive, it essentially a modern day Nissan GT-R

This. It's a bit crazy some people chose automatic RWD on the G82 after the M xDrive became available. I get manual RWD as that's the only manual variant, but the others - arguing about 'purity' and other nonsense.

Everybody who took a blind leap of faith on the AWD in 2021 made out like crazy - best decision I made in hindsight. All the features, without de-contenting, at a lower price and 0.9% and being able to enjoy the generation longer than those who came later after the reviews and the 'I changed my mind about the looks' phase.

It is insane that this car feels like a brand-new, ultra-special car approaching the 4th year of ownership. The performance, looks, everything - and it's the most reliable car I've ever owned.

I had a 2020 F83 and I LOVED IT!
When I saw the G8x grill…meeehhhhhh!
But I saw it in person and thought, well…it’s not THAT terrible, so I got a 2022 G83.
Hands DOWN the G8x is one of the top 5 BMWs ever!
Now, I LOVE how it looks (incredibly aggressive)…added a few mods and it has totally become one of my favorite cars of all time.
It drives and performs SO WELL…if you wind up pulling the trigger, trust me, you will NOT look back!

Heh, looked it up:

Accounting for inflation, $112,000 in 2019 is worth $140,697 in 2025

For us BMW newcomers - I like** the large, audacious grills on the G80/82.

Then - the platform. I mean, a crappy piggy + M3/4 and you easily have CS/CSL power. Then.... add a tune. I mean w/ ethanol = supercar power.

I stopped watching carwow! It was cool a few years ago, but now he’s annoying. He’s not a car guy he’s a wannabe car guy, clown funny man, who tries to make fun of everything.

I have always dreamt of owning an M during college, and I finally was able to own an F82 in my perfect spec (San Marino Blue) fully loaded with the exception of CCBs a few years ago- loved that car. IMO, probably the coolest modern BMW with a timeless design that’ll hold its own for years to come! Still love seeing the F8Xs and had a ton of fun with it.

When the G8Xs launched and I went to a local event showcasing the M3, I had doubts and hated it. Fast forward two years from then, I’m in a manual G80 and love driving it! All great cars for different times.

F82 CS best looking M car of all time. Damn.

2nd M3 CSL.

Everything else in M3 land, save for the E30, just straight up disappointment.
