Huge Flaw Fixed with the G90 M5 - Zunsport Grilles

As many of you know, the G90/G99 M5 has a pretty exposed front end. The radiators, oil cooler, and intercoolers are vulnerable to damage from road debris – rocks, stones, bugs, you name it. A single hit in the wrong place can lead to expensive repairs, downtime, and even potential engine issues. This isn't just a theoretical problem; I've seen posts on here and other forums about this exact issue.

Exposed G90 M5 Radiators

Exposed G90 M5 oil cooler

We first noticed this issue with the G8X M cars receiving damage oil coolers that were heavily exposed underneath the car.

Damaged G82 M4 oil cooler

The G90 M5 has a similar set up underneath which could cause catastrophic engine failure if damaged draining engine oil.

Zunsport G90 M5 oil cooler guard

The Benefits:
  • Prevention is Key: This isn't about aesthetics (though it does look great). It's about preventing potentially thousands in repair costs. A punctured radiator or oil cooler is a bad day.
  • No Performance Loss: The Zunsport mesh is designed for maximum airflow, so you get the protection without sacrificing cooling performance. Crucial for a high-performance car like the M5.
  • OEM Look: The gloss black stainless steel mesh integrates perfectly with the M5's design. It looks like it should have been there from the factory.
  • DIY Friendly: The installation is relatively straightforward. We've produced a detailed installation video below.

What You Get:
The kit includes 5 gloss black stainless steel wire mesh grilles
  • Two Upper Grilles
  • Two Lower Bumper Grilles
  • One Oil Cooler Grille

Shop the full kit.

These can also be purchased individually:
Shop Grille insert
Shop Lower Radiator Grille
Shop Oil Cooler Guard

You would think bmw would learn from their mistake on this problem from the G8X and make this standard across platforms. This looks like a solid solution, but i wish the mesh was a bit more recessed behind. IMO this kinda of takes away from the effect of the front ducts. But protection from the M tax definitely comes first!

This has existed for longer than the G8x.

This was a well known issue with some completely bricked engines on the F8x as well.

In the overall picture it’s very rare, however.

I’ll gladly take some rock dings over these. They look like baby gates you put across a doorway…

Agreed. We boosted the shadows in the above photos to present the grilles better however in person they are subtle.

Below is a shot straight out of my iPhone with a polarising filter for reference.

That sure is useful at least the one under the car. The one added to the front looks incredibly bad... Maybe if the were mounted closer to the rads deeper inside, out of view ?

Porsches have got huge holes without any sort of protection. Neighbours 718 is as exposed as the G90 or F95.

Hopefully this gets redesigned to sit inside of the bumper so its less noticeable. It's also bit pricey for some chicken wire.

I'm of the opinion, that they look just fine. Where is the "buy now" button?

I recommend getting it.

Had a 2021 M550, great car, it was a tough decision to get rid off.

One day got a warning telling me the coolant needs refill. So I refill it, I did noticed it the reservoir was empty. Keep checking for leaks but couldn’t find any.

Very next day, turned the car on and the warning light again. Check under the car and low and behold the entire coolant was on the garage floor. Don’t know what the hell is going on.

Took it to the dealer, they told me the passenger side auxiliary radiator is cracked, the crack was caused by a hard object (most likely a rock) hitting the radiator.

So I said okay, fix it. Well no so fast, the dealer told me that this is not due to a mechanical malfunction but due to road hazard (rock hitting the radiator while driving). Car warranty don’t cover it.

Bill is $2,700, yeah nice, very nice! :-{

So I contacted my insurance company and they cover the repair minus the deductible. Keep in mind your next car insurance renewal bill most likely will come up.

I don’t think it looks so bad, if you want to wait for a better version then go ahead. I ordered the oil and the lower portion. I think is a good idea, specially this being a high performance car.

Thanks for sharing, That $2,700 radiator repair highlights exactly why we developed these grilles with zunsport. They're about preventing those costly, unexpected damages from road debris. Glad you're seeing the value and recommending them.
