Do you charge to 100%?

Curious, when charging do you charge to 100%?

I have been, but now I’ve thought about it, is it better to not do that to prolong the battery life? Or has BMW already factored that in and 100% charge giving me 67km of EV distance is fine, as the battery capacity is greater than it is allowing and 100% charge isn’t actually 100% of the battery capacity.

Also interested in a discussion regarding this procedure . Tesla owner since 2016 and it’s known for bev that besides long road trip your daily charge should be at best 70-80% (besides some model 3 and y’s that battery chemistry requires 100% )
I just purchased a new G90 and noticed that charge level was set at 100% initially ,did lower to 80% ,also do you need to daily charge the battery or you can run ice and whatever energy recovery happens is what the battery has as a charge?i have level 2 with 14-50 outlet so it charges at 32A pretty fast when the bmw fast charger is plugged in
Thanks

Turns out the cars user manual says what to do. BMW recommends charging to 80%.

I'm resurrecting this old thread since my G99 is en route to me.

My guess is the 80% is a holdover for a full EV spec. There is roughly 1/3 of the pack reserved for buffer.... so charging to 100% is really only charging the pack to 64% of total capacity. I will be charging to 100% for max EV range.

I plan to do the same with the buffer of usable vs full capacity.

What chargers is everyone using and how long does it take to go to 80 or 100%?

I use the one came with the car. The length depends on voltage, and current you want to charge it with. I have 240V 50A outlet, but I set the charging current at 20A intead of 40A. With this, from 10% to 90% takes less than 3 hr. It’s being charged at night while I’m sleeping so I am not in a rush to pump 40A to charge it.

I'm also charging to 100%. Manual says to charge to 80% when not using it for more than 2 weeks. Even if the capacity decreases after 10 years, no point in living with lower range for 10 years to maximize range after that.

I plan to charge the M5 to 100% as needed. We charge our X5 50e every night to 100% because the entire battery gets used for the commute the next day. No issues so far in 2 years of ownership.

I charge on a regular wall outlet every night - It doesn’t always hit 100%, usually starting around 3 miles left and going for about 13 hours of charge…

I have an L2 charger at home, and I charge it up as needed. I switched it to 80% because why not? It doesn't cause me any issues in my day-to-day, and I can charge it up easily at home. So if it's better for the car and doesn't affect my day-to-day usage, there's no downside.

But this works for me because my daily commute is like 8 miles tops. If I had more than that, I probably wouldn't change it from 100.

What limit for AC Charging did you set it at for regular wall outlet? I'm planning to do this since I don't have any special charger at home

I was told by the handover person at BMW Welt (A huge BMW exhibition hall in Munich) that I can go up to 100% without any issues. That the 80% recommendation is for the EV only and that the M5 batter has a large battery buffer anyway, that you don't charge.

Besides, the car can charge up to 100% while driving anyway.

I noticed that in the default comfort mode, it doesn't charge much and even depletes the charge. When I use the M1 setting, it recharges to full most times.

With the bmw charger that came with the car. Is there a way to turn it off besides pulling the plug? If I leave it plugged in the blue light stays on and seems weird to leave it on when I’m not charging the car. Unplugging and plugging it over and over again would put stress on the plugs instead since it’s so tight .

The light may stay on, but the car itself isn't drawing any power.
