Street Racing

Just another reason to not allow that type of talk here. Having a 9 month old daughter, I cannot even imagine doing something this stupid ever, let alone with her in the car.

A newborn baby girl died after she was thrown from her car seat during an apparent street race that ended in a crash in Phoenix, police said.

The 6-week-old infant died Monday night, according to MyFOXPhoenix.com.
The 24-year-old unidentified driver of the Ford Mustang that was carrying the child was listed in critical condition.
Police believe the man behind the wheel was racing another vehicle with the baby girl strapped in her car seat in the back when he lost control and crashed into a utility pole in the western part of the city.
The alleged joy ride ended in tragedy: The child was ejected from the Mustang and died from her injuries.
There was no immediate word as to whether charges would be filed.

I came across an idiot like this once.
Pulled up to a light and this middle aged guy in a old Holden, big mullet, sunnies etc (NZer's know what I mean when I say classic westie) stopped on the inside of me. Light turned green and I gave it a bit of gas because I knew the road went down to one lane.
He took exception and floored it and swung right across to the outside of me and overtook on the other side of the road in double yellow lines coming around a left hand sweeper.

I let him go for his life but as he passes I look up and there is a young baby girl in the back seat strapped into a baby seat. WTF!?

Some people are just insane. I can't even imagine what would possess you to do something like that in the first place let alone with a child in the car.

What's scarier is the rise of "organized" street racing. A kid who works in my office saw my autographed Speed World Challenge poster last week and asks me "so do you like cars?". I start talking to him about what types of racing I like to watch, and tell him that I do auto-x, etc... then he tells me he also "races". I ask him to clarify, and he goes on to tell me about a local Honda "club" that goes street racing on city streets late at night. The conversation soon turned into a lecture on my part, where I basically told him that one day his indiscretions will catch up with him and that he needs to grow up. I gave him the contact information for some legit motorsport clubs where he can properly learn car control and racing skills on the track. He seemed to agree with my point of view and said he would look into that. Hopefully that talk will result in one less idiot making a menace of himself on city streets.

I remember when street racing was big back in the 90s with the original FF Hondas, but now? Street racing have gotten more organized? Since when was this?

By "organized" I am in no way implying it is sanctioned by any legitimate organization (hence the quotation marks in my reply above). Basically a bunch of punk kids who form their own club, meet up on a regular basis and recklessly endanger the lives of others. Where are the cops when you need them?
