Help: Red Exclaimation mark with Gear warning lamp today (Transmission Limp Home Prog

Hi there,

Today I was driving my E90 and it was snowing pretty heavily. The warning lamp: red exclaimation mark with a Gear around it lit up twice today. It scared the heck out of me.

The description of the lamp is on page 130 of owner's manual)

Transmission limp home program active with restricted range of gears, possibly with reduced acceleration. Gears can be engaged without depressing the brake pedal.

I brought my car to BMW and the service advisor said that the warning lamp lights up to prevent the engine from overheating or over-reving and he told me not to worry about it. Is this true or is there something wrong with my car? And what does the warning lamp mean?

Try the engine and drivetrain section. I don't know if you should worry, but I wouldn't be happy if that happened to me.
