in xp pro, can you password protect a single folder in my documents? I dont wanna do that multiple user thing

As far as I know you can only set your personal profile direcotry (under docs and settings directory) to password protected. But maybe someone knows of something different.

I believe you can put your docs in Outlook and password protect that.

If you login as yourself and you have admin rights. I don't think there's a way to password protect a file or single folder. Here's a trick you can try.

1)Right mouse click on the folder go to properties, check the "hidden" box.
2)Within the my document window, on top find " Tools" click and go to "folder options"
3) click on the " View" tap. Under " Hidden files and folders" section
click on " Do not show hidden files or folders"

After that the folder is hidden you won't see it in my document. When you want to see it again just repeat steps 1 and 2, then " Hidden files and folders" section click on " Show hidden files and folders"

This little trick would only work if other people who are using your pc isn't pc savy. If you do a google search you might be able to find some utility that can password protect folders. Not sure if this will help you. Cheers:rocks: :rocks:

You need to download windows 'personal folder' from their download centre.

It creates an lighty encyrpted password protected folder for your user name only.

If you are turning on/off file sharing, that does not solved your problem of not allowing someone else to walk up to your computer and open a folder that you want no one to see. File sharing is for local network to see or not see a files/folders from your computer (i think). Turning the folder to invisible is not that secure and someone else like me can always make it visible again. If you are talking about password protect a word document or excel, then it is possible. For any document, I am not sure there is a way.

actually, I just hid it in my documents, changed the icon, put some weird name on it, and you have to go through like 5 folders full of empty files with weird icons and weird names to get to it, its just some porn that I dont want my 12 year old son to ever find- hell, if he finds it now, he deserves to watch it!! and its not like he would be looking for a stashed away file anyway, thanks to all for the help!

He indicates that he does not want to do the multiple user security thing. But I agreed with you. To lock a folder down completey, you have to set security and alllow only the user to read/write/modify access to the folder. But I think another admin user can go in and change his setup right? Search Microsoft web site for small app call "Private Folder". I just install on my laptop last week. It's create on your desktop folder that only person who new password can open this folder.

I like free stuff but not on windows (free software for windows might have security loop holes)...
