Smoking in public was banned 3 years ago in Italy...no protests and 100 percent compliance. Smoking had got to be one of the most asinine ways to kill yourself and people around you - when is the US going to wake up and pass some sensible laws outlawing smoking in all states?

Actually there are studies to show that some very moderate alcohol intake is better than none, to say nothing of all the ones that show benefits from red wine and even beer, again, in moderation.

Smoking was banned in all public buildings and establishments, or any covered area, in July here. Kind of funny that people can't smoke outside under an umbrella anymore.

Now we just have to figure out what to do with all those people huddled right outside the doors of shopping malls and office buildings frantically puffing away during their 5 minute break. I mean there are signs all over the place stating no smoking within 30 or so feet of the door...

yea, the indoor smoking ban in cali has been in effect for a long time (work place, public buildings, malls, restaurants, clubs, bars, etc...).

anytime i go into nevada (or really out of state), i think it's werid too when the hostess asks "smoking or non?"

Do they do the same thing in Cali that certain establishments pull here in Ontario whereby they charge a "membership fee" (typ. $5) which constitutes them as a "private club" so that "members" can smoke?

i've seen a couple places that were "membership only". one place was a japanese ramen place my friend took me to. on the door it says "members only", but they never asked for anything. we had our dinner, and there was several people smoking inside. my friend said they get away with it because it's suppose to be a members only establishment. i'm not exactly sure if it's even legal though.

oh, and this just came to mind. in cali, there's vietnamese coffee shops and korean cafe's. these places usually allow smoking, even though it's not legal. they post up no smoking signs, but the waitress will provide you with makeshift astray (for example a small cup with wet napkin in it). this is also true for some karaoke places with private rooms.

then, there's actually some clubs with smoking rooms. they usually have terrible ventilation.

The difference is that when I consume an alcoholic drink, it in no way affects your comfort or health. When some smokes in proximity to me it stinks, and I end up stinking.

Perhaps you should educate yourself a little. Smoking is hazardous at any dose to the smoker and to those exposed to the smoke.

Alcohol on the other hand is cardioprotective at low doses and lowers social inhibitions at these same dose, both benefits

I like in Cal for 10 years and never really saw this like I do here in Toronto. I think it's because in California the ban was pretty much ushered in with praise, while here it's been as opposed as it has been promoted. Although I did see that two "smoking clubs", one in Ottawa and one in Toronto recently closed due to lack of business.

I agree with non-smoking in restaurants. I’m the first one to complain when someone smokes next to me, especially when I’m eating. I don’t like it when I go in or come out of a building and have people blowing smoke in my face.

However, I don’t agree with banning smoking in bars and clubs. Smoking is part of the whole experience of going to bar. It’s like banning popcorn from movie theatres, you can still watch a movie but it’s not the same thing.

Here in Quebec most restaurants seem to be making more money. It’s only been 4 months that law has been implemented and in general it seems to be a good thing. With regards to bars, the situation is completely the opposite, they are losing business. I’ve noticed now that when I go to a bar or a club there a lot less people. It’s becoming boring. Unfortunately, I don’t like to stay home and watch TV. I like to go out and meet people. Like I mentioned on my previous post the party is outside. The problem with Quebec is that we don’t have California weather here it rains often and it gets really cold in the winter.

You're right. However

What about people who eat fat?
What about people who don't excersise?
Etc,Etc.....

In thast case we should prohibit everything that isn't healthy. Maybe we should privatise health care?

I used to play in a country band back in 1992 and we were gigging in a bar on hymus at Sources. Remember that winter, it was like, -30 C every day and -40 C every night?

That bar was so disgusting because they couldn't open the doors or windows for fresh air ever......that's when I decided enough was enough...I made my choice to only play in smoke-free environments. God thing it wasn't my only job, eh?
