Canon 30D or Nikon D80
I have been looking into buying a Digital SLR. I have it bassicly narrowed down to 2 different camera's. The Canon 30D and the Nikon D80. Both are around the same price, so this is not the issue. I personally have always been a Canon guy. But with the new Nikon's D80 reviews its a great camera. Just want to see what your take on these awesome camera's are.

I have the D80's daddy, the D100, and I like it. I also have it's film cousin, the F100. The advantage here is all six of my lenses work with either body, although the D100 does have the 1.5X magnification factor.

I've had a 20D for a couple of years and love it, so would recommend the 30D. Especially if as a Canon guy previously you've got lenses you can continue to use.

Get the Nikon! I have three of them! The D80 is a great camera. If you get the kit, just make sure it comes with a good lens. Nikon makes great lenses, you may find that the kit lens is not fast enough though.

Though all the reviews I keep reading say canon is def the better camera. I just have to make this decision. Nikon or Canon. What's getting me is one of my friends is a pro-photographer in NYC. He only uses Canon and wants to hear nothing else. But I am really liking the new D80 so I will have some descisions to make.

Either camera will do you well - they're both excellent. I think the Canon has better high iso performance (less noise) and is a tad better built. Check them out at the store and see which feels best.
When deciding on a camera, while the body is somewhat important, you are really buying into a lens system. The camera will be outdated every couple of years but the lenses can last you a lot longer if you look after them. I hear Nikon has superior but more pricey glass (I shoot Canon). Two things to consider if you buy the 30D 1) Rumor is the 40D is around the corner, but I have seen no evidence whatsoever to substantiate that. The PMA show is in March and sometimes coincides with product announcements. 2) You can get a rebate if you buy before 13th Jan here is the link. http://www.usa.canon.com/app/pdf/Pro...Form_Oct06.pdf

Yes I hear there is a rumor about the 40D. Suppose to have 10.1 or 10.2 Mega Pixels and have anti- dust. Should be very nice. But at that point I will def get the 30D so I can pay less. LOL. Also the I agree the lenses are everything. I am probably going to opt. for a better lense once I buy it.

If you haven't already pulled the trigger, the rebates were just extended to 2/19.

As always, Gripster's advice is solid...both are great cameras. The best thing to do is to go hold them and check out the controls and see which seems more comfortable to you. I'm a 30D owner myself, and it is a very nice camera. For me, the rumored features of the 40D weren't compelling enough for me to wait for it. The good news is that these cameras and lenses hold their value very well (probably even better than our Bimmers), so you can always sell and upgrade later.

+1 on the Canon, go for the 30D great camera. Unfortunately I'm a little biased as I've been lazy to do the research on the Nikon's but I've used a D50 or D70 or something before (don't remember) and I hated the feel of the camera, it just didn't feel right, my 350D on the other hand is great =]
