I'm located in Los Angeles and I'm looking to upgrade, I'm planning to sell my canon xs kit. It's a good camera to start off with. Pm me if you have any questions.

in that price range, it's either the Nikon D3000 or Canon equivalent.

haha how funny, i'm selling my Canon XTi as well. Comes with 2 extra batteries, battery, and 50mm f/1.8 grip. The camera is still under warranty until March of next year.

If you are having trouble deciding between Canon or Nikon, head to Sammy's Camera and play around with both, the interface is a little different. However, i THINK theres a shutter-priority mode in lower end Canon but not in Nikon. Shutter-priority mode is pretty good when you are going to take pictures of light trails.

Good rule of thumb is to put majority of your budget into lenses, but with a tighter budget then buying a recent model for someone you know or even a refurb unit direct from Canon or Nikon are good choices

advice: buy a used D40 ($200-$300), body only, and some old manual focus prime lenses (i.e.: $40 for a 1980 50mm f/1.8). you'll take better images while being forced to take your time to compose and focus. fact.

then you can dump your money into some expensive gear when you know you're going to enjoy it. don't bother with these entry-level DSLR kits if you're not going to spend big bucks - you might as well get an advanced point-and-shoot like a G10/G11 or something.

i started out with a Nikon D60 but that's been discontinued and the replacement is the D3000.

if you want to save some money (like what rodi said) buy used...craigslist is a great place
