I've heard many complaining about that too. I had one for a while and it's kinda wack.

Is it because my iphone firmwire is too new?
Yes. Its because in your case you have a "tethered" jailbreak. Im gonna assume your friend used Blackra1n to jailbreak it. So what youve gotta do is download Blackra1n online (its free) and whenever you restart your iphone and it freezes you in the "connect to itunes" screen, just plug it in and run blackrain and that will start your iphone while not changing everything.

Enjoy

Oh. And its best not to turn your iphone off or let it run out of batteries. This problem only happens on 3gs with 3.1.2 and if the third, fourth and fifth numbers in the serial code are equal to 950 or higher.

There is no easy fix for this? I can't downgrade my firmwire on my iphone?

Also, I have a 2G iphone but I can't unlock it for my GF to use. When I turn it on, it has the usb itune icon. When I plug it in, it tries to make me activate my plan with ATT. How do I get around this and jailbreak through blackrain? Even tried with winpwn but did not work.

Unfortunately no. When they made the 3gs, they made it so you couldnt downgrade it and about halfway through the production they changed the bootloader just to mess with us. Realistically it isnt that bad once you get it working 100%. Just dont let it run out of battery on you in the middle of nowhere cause then you got a problem.

As for your gf... Can you get it to just be on without the itunes mode? Cause realistically blackra1n supports "hactivation" so you dont have to use an ATT plan to activate it. Just get out of the connect to itunes mode and you can do it. And does your gf have att? or does she have a different carrier?

I've had an N95 NAM, N95 8GB NAM, N96 NAM, and the N97 NAM. I'm a huge Nokia fan. I started getting sick of symbian os on their phones. It was very buggy, would freeze often, and lagged greatly. Even after the firmware updates it continued with those problems. I decided to try out th iPhone 3GS. Truthfully I am very happy with the decision. Words actually won't be able to describe what it can and can not do. You would actually have to go to the store and play with one. For now I have no regrets.

The price of those toys is ridiculous.

Basically you can have a laptop 100x more powerful and 10x more complex to assemble for less. There is a limit to the argument of cost vs miniaturization.

If I want to buy a 3G considering my 200$ credit because of my 24 months phone plan (no data) , it would be 450$ txs in for the 3G and 563$ for the 3GS.

I am leaning toward a Droid phone and I limit myself to 300$ top all included out of my pocket (still considering the 200$ credit)

How did it get into the itunes mode? Does she not have a backup she can restore it from? And did you try just holding the home and power button at the same time for like... 30 seconds?

It was a brand new iphone 2g.

Once I turn it on it has this.

You bought a new iPhone 2g? Hmm...
Anyway... my best recommendation would be to get it into that emergency call/battery/time screen and then plug it into your computer and closing itunes. Then jailbreak it with Blackra1n since it should have the OS 3.1.2 installed on it. Honestly its kinda hard for me to give good instructions without the phone in front of me. Sorry I try my best using my "hit and miss" directions, lol. And for the record, dont go ahead and start installing things if the jailbreak does work cause the snow unlock that comes with blackra1n wont work on the 2g. There are more compicated directions for that :/

Good luck
