Official Bird In Flight (BIF) Thread

I've seen some other members in here posting some BIF pics, so I thought we could post them all in this thread.

Never really tried this type if pics before, but I had to try it since I just got the new Canon 7D and I had to test the 8fps and the new AF system.
And I'm very happy how the pics turned out.

I used the 70-200 f/2.8L IS for these pics.

OK, I'll play.

Here's a few (unfortunately all of these were back when I was shooting with 6-8 MP cameras - wish I could go back and reshoot with a 7D or 5D2)...

Heron in Florida

Sandhill Crane in New Mexico

Violet Green Swallow at Mono Lake, CA

Black Kite in N.T. Australia

Great shot Doc. I caught a shot of a juvenile bald eagle in almost that exact state of plummage, in almost the exact same pose. Great shot.

Here's one of mine from last weekend:

Look Out Below

Of course, that's a Canada goose. He's landing into a 30-mph wind (froze my ass) as the sun sets. They sleep on the ice or water to avoid the coyotes at night. Still, you'll occasionally find one in pieces near the lake.

Yeah, the 400 f/5.6L has stunning IQ. I just wish it had IS and, better yet, was an f/4. Still, on the tripod it is great, as in this shot. I think that I was stopped down a little there because the birds were coming in very close and I needed DOF.

Just don't under expose and the 7D is wonderful up to ISO 1600. It also helps if the BG is light and the subject is big, as with this goose. Maybe I'll post a ISO 6400 (maybe we need a high-ISO thread). I was amazed at some shots of dear that I took after sunset. The image was brighter than real life and the noise, after processing, was manageable, just don't underexpose and the 7D is pretty amazing.

Still, I want an EF 500mm f/4L IS. I'd hoped to have a bonus to pay for it, but that evaporated, so I'm looking at deferral or using savings. Ugh. At least I have a choice.

Dave

Nice Rodi!

Even in low light, you captured the subtle colors of a brown pelican, not easy. Of course, we all know that Rodi knows what he's doing.

really? thanks. that's actually the only shot of a bird in flight that I have, I think. borrowed a 400mm on my last vacation to california to play with.
the seagulls shot was just me taking a break while the model changed clothes. ha.
i didn't sit for a sunrise in the cold to get it though, so it's not as special.

@Dr_Jones: yes. you're too kind. :]

ooh, i lied. just found this one.
