Best Lense for interior/exterior real estate

Hey guys

I have a Canon Rebel XSi and i need to purchase a lense that can capture an entire room. Average size of room is about 15'x15'. Id like something that can capture the detail of mostly everything in the photo.

I was highly recommended the Tokina 11-16mm 2.8.

Any other suggestions? I need to make this purchase very soon.

Thanks guys

Definitely a wide angle, try the Sigma 10-20mm lens (pretty sure they make one in a Canon mount). Great wide angle pictures, sharp to the edge.

+1 on the 10-20mm. Great lens, captures everything.

+2 on a 10-22 for a crop. I have Canon's 10-22mm (got an excellent deal) and love it. At times I miss it when using a 16-35.

Just be careful with these ultra wide angle lenses, as they will distort a room pretty noticeably if you get the angle wrong. Try to keep the image sensor as parallel as possible to your subject. If you have to tilt up or down to get the whole room in the viewfinder, you'll create some really noticeable distortion. Keep a close eye on vertical or horizontal lines near the edge of the frame.

This isn't a knock on the Canon 10-22, it is just a "side effect" of UWA lenses.

Ideally, a FF Canon with the 17mm TS-E would be best for indoor work, but I don't think you are willing to drop that kind of coin....

True, there can be some distortion depending on how you set up for the shot. You can also go so far as to use the 10-22mm as a bit of a fisheye lens at the wide end. I think it adds to the character of the lens...it makes the lens a little more fun IMO. I'm sure it does annoy people, though, so, it is good that you pointed it out.

Yep, but the usage needs to be considered. If this is for something like home listings, a hugely distorted image of a room wouldn't be desired. Or an advertisement for a furniture store or interior decorator. But just for the sake of taking pictures of architecture or interiors because that is what you want to shoot, then those are less of a concern.

I like my Tokina 12-24 lens a lot and the 11-16 is supposed to be more of the same so I'd recommend that one but considering the application, the extra reach of the sigma may prove helpful.

I sold a wide-angle lens to a real-estate agent...he came back to buy my D300 a few months later and told me that the lens was horrible for his work. Distortion EVERYWHERE.

iirc, weren't tilt-shit lenses originally developed to combat this distortion?

No arguments here, sir. I was speaking just in general for the lens (sans specific application). I agree that it wouldn't be the most desired effect, intentional or not, for this application.

No one has said this but I would hope you have a good flash. Granted, lights should be on but there's some homes you sell that good lighting is not always the case.

I'll put in another vote for the Tokina 11-16 f2.8. Fantastic lens at a reasonable price point considering it's speed.

I use the Canon EFS 10-22mm...

I disagree with the comments about distortion as I have used that to great effect.....
