Right turn or no?
this right lane has a right turn mark on the ground, but it doesn't have the "right turn only" sign up. so is it legal to go straight or is it right turn only?

There is one particular intersection in Tallahassee where the left most lane has a turn arrow, but directly across the intersection it is another left hand turn for the next intersection. Rather than cross the intersection and then cut to the left (there is only about 300 feet between lights) I've always just gone straight in the left lane through the first light. I've done this in front of multiple police and never gotten pulled over. You can see what I mean here: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sour...,14.24,,0,8.29

unless stated otherwise, i think it's fine to continue straight. if anything, you could always tell the officer 'nowhere is it posted that lane is right-turn only'

The key thing to note is that there are solid white lines that tell you you shouldn't be switching lanes after the first intersection. |

The thing is that lane is also a left turn for that light, so sometimes people stop at that light to make a left at the first light and people pass them in the middle then move over once across the intersection. It's a weird setup.

The solid white lines mean you must be in that lane if you want to turn left at the following intersection. |

Turn only. Good example is on New Hampshire Ave coming out of DC. Right most lane has painted arrow, while lane next to it can either turn or go straight. Many accidents because right lane drivers don't realize they MUST turn. Some go straight and T-bone the driver in the next lane as he/she tries to turn right. Not the best scenario and it seems to vary by state but in our area I believe you must always follow what's painted.

In my example that is the exact reason people think they can go straight because the lane continues on as if you weren't forced to turn. Definitely not the best setup.
Then there are also lanes where cars must turn but buses can continue on straight, adding to driver confusion. |
