2008 335i Steptronic question

When using the steptronic and slowing down to a stoplight, etc I usually just let the car downshift itself. It feels hard on the transmission to force the downshifts. Is this proper, to let it downshift itself, or is there a better way?

You can downshift yourself, if you go too low a gear it will display what you wanted for a second before adjusting to what the engine thinks is acceptable. For the most part the engine doesn't interfere and when it does 75% of the time its protecting the engine.
