BMW Dominates 2011 Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com Best Resale Value Awards

* 17.11.2010
* Press Release

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – November 17, 2010, 12:00am EDT… The BMW brand has won Best Resale Value Luxury Brand for the 2011 model year by Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com. In addition, the BMW X5 and BMW X6 Sports Activity Vehicles each won places on the KBB.com 2011 model year list of Top 10 Models for Best Resale Value, and the X5 xDrive35d Advanced Diesel was chosen as Best Resale Value for Hybrid / Alternative Energy Utility Vehicle. Not stopping there, the BMW X5 also won the 2011 Best Resale Value award in the Luxury Utility Vehicle category.

“At BMW, we believe our vehicles’ strong resale value is a result not only of the innovation, engineering and design aesthetics built into each one of our cars, but also the quality of the BMW ownership experience in total,” said Peter Miles, BMW of North America’s Executive Vice President of Operations. Miles accepted the awards for BMW on the eve of the 2010 Los Angeles International Auto Show, saying, “BMW vehicles serve as industry benchmarks when new then strongly influence the used-car market as they go on to satisfy additional owners. BMW resale value proves that.”

“Consumers should take a good look at the projected resale value of a car when choosing their next new-vehicle purchase, and they would be wise to carefully consider the 2011 Best Resale Value Award winning vehicles and brands on this year’s list,” said James Bell, executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com “Taking the time to research and choose vehicle makes, models and options wisely now can help new-car shoppers hold value down the road when they go to sell or trade-in the vehicle.”

Kelley Blue Book’s Best Resale Value Awards are based on projections from the Kelley Blue BookŪ Official Residual Value Guide, determined by an expert staff of automotive analysts. These prestigious awards honor vehicles expected to maintain the greatest proportion of their original list price after five years of ownership. Low-volume vehicles and vehicles with a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price of more than $60,000 are excluded from award consideration, except in the luxury and high-performance categories.

Nothing says that the KBB people are "experts" like putting a diesel vehicle in a "Hybrid / Alternative Energy Utility Vehicle" category...

That's just silly.

not sure if serious.

335i and 135i resale values are pretty low IMHO. i bought my car for $17k off the sticker price (that was still in the glove box), and it was around 2 years old.

You don't buy new cars as an investment... at least not in th 30-50k range so depreciation is the name of the game.

My 2008 135 has depreciated at a friggin' alarming rate. It's pathetic honestly... trying to sell it now and it's just terrible.

i never said you buy a car as an investment. i'm just puzzled how bmw claims top honors for resale value. % wise, honda and toyota probably mop the floor with bmw's resale values.

Perhaps BMW would also be so good as to enligten us with how many X5 35Ds have been sold? Is this based on the resale of 50 cars?

Here in the netherlands BMW's have an awesome resale value. Especially the fully optioned ones. But i found the article weird. Especially that 35d.

I'm kind of confused, when people buy a car 2-3 years old (or sell it in this case), what are you expecting the drop in resale value to be? A car loses its biggest chunk of resale value in the first few years (or seconds for that matter when leaving a dealer lots). I was recently shopping (and got a BMW 335xi) and after comparing literally 16 different cars in the same range/category/class, the BMW had by far the best residual (based on resale value for the most part). So yes, KBB is absolutely right. However, don't mention your experience of buying or selling a 2-3 yr old car without comparable figures for the competition, doesn't really make too much sense since you have a sample size of 1...you.

Actually I believe it to be a high amount. My parents just picked up theirs that they ordered 4 weeks ago new. There weren't any available locally at the time. BMW ran a $4k rebate on the 35Ds as well as you get a kickback from Uncle Sam.

+1000. BMW & Mini have rated in the top 5 for residual value for the past decade and beyond. I bought my CPO '07 e92 for $28k ($48k sticker) this past May. So three years and $20k depreciation. That's a .583 or 58.3% residual. Crazy good! 41.7% depreciation over three years is not bad at all. Go research most GM/Ford/Chrysler products...you'll see these rates at 50-60%+ depreciation.

Anyone that is going to complain about your current vehicle's manufacturer winning an award from a company/group as prestigious and well known as KBB is simply ignorant. You honestly believe that with the amount of historical and real-time data they have that they would just give out such a defining honor? This only benefits everyone on this board.

BMW has sold 749 X5 diesels in the US in October. For Year-to-date (January through October), they had sold 6,353 of them.

Cheers!

It is sort of subtle in the long name of the award, but BMW won for a "Luxury" brand. It's certainly possible that Honda and Toyota would beat them out in an overall comparison, but I don't really know.

Cheers!

So the resale of them is probably 500 or less, probably close to the minimal number required to qualify (assuming Kelley has criteria).
The point is that BMS is crowing over a not much of an accomplishment. Now if the car in question was one of their major sellers like a 328i they'd have good reason to celebrate. This is just typical marketing BS.
