Talking Evo rear spoiler restoration project

Hey;

Was given a Evo rear spoiler with the factory clear coat peeling, chipping and badly yellowed. Apparently, this is a known issue with this model. Really bad shape!! Unfortunately, I never took a picture before I started it (thought I had, but apparently not).

Here's the project pictures from about 1/3 way through initial sanding through to finished spoiler:

Now Ready for Clear Coat:

Just like new (actually in this case; better cause this won't yellow, chip or peel) :thumbup:

NO real tricks here.

1. Wet sanded starting with 220, then 400, 800 + 1000. Kept washing and drying regularly to ensure I wasn't cutting too close. 90% of sanding done with 220 grit. About 3 sheets of 220 required. about 2 sheets of each of the other grits.

2. Clear coat. Used BASF DC92 base, DH42 rapid hardener and UR50 reducer (20% for first coat and 30% for second coat; thinner + smoother, but more prone to runs; so have to be real careful).

That's it!! Just about 6 hours total of wet sanding. No power tools even though I have orbital sanders, polishers, etc..... didn't want to chance cutting through cloth.....

Actually quite proud of it..... as I said previously, I was real concerned about damaging carbon fiber base as the clear was sooooo badly damaged...

Very good work. Painting isn't impossible and when you get the hang of it and remember a few rules you'll be able to keep doing good. Got any pics of your car?

Setting the gun is the biggest challenge now! Have a decent compressor running it.... 60 gallon, 18.5 cfm @ 100psi; Tsunami 3-stage filtration and a DeVilbiss GFG-670 Cup feed. One drawback is I'm running 1/4" pipes.... Need to install the 1/2" manifold and 5/8 high flow fittings. I've had the parts for the manifold on the floor for the last 4 months; been crazy..... Takes a while to setup gun each time... Have test pieces I spray to check flow, etc before spraying anything to be finished.....

Here's a couple of pics of my car:

The rubber @ top pf lip was just until I properly fitted it.... Notice it's gone in the above picture......

After installation of a DCT shifter and transferring all functions, I needed custom manual shift boot. Going to be cutting down about 1" or more soon!!

Engine Bay Pictures:

Those engine covers now are almost done and look like this....
