Peach flavored in a ball jar seems to be a big seller here in middle TN.

We did one of those taste testing things where we could try a bunch, then walked around and got some more shine at another place down the street. I remember trying a root beer and vanilla one that were pretty good.

‘Shine ain’t whiskey. It is essentially pure alcohol, cut with water, and then (sometimes) flavored. Whiskey is aged in barrels which gives it its flavors and color, then it is cut with water to bring the proof down.

Real moonshine is illegal (not tax stamped); so the stuff in stores is not really moonshine - just high proof alcohol and legal. Around here it is available in mason jars and flavored as “apple pie”, “peach pie”, “strawberry pie” and a few others, as well as white lightening (no flavor, high proof). It generally seems to be around 120 proof but you can find it higher. Apple Pie is good over vanilla ice cream.

I do know the difference. I was sort of making a general statement about how many of the distillers are now making flavoured whisk(e)y and IMHO it's sacrilege.....it's like chocolate martini's and such....what they are is panty drinks not martini's, and the favoured whisk(e)y is a liqueur. Just my two cents....end of Rant.

There is only one way to make a Martini.

3oz Gin in a martini glass.
1 or 2 olives
Someone whispers the word 'vermouth' as they walk by

That's it. Period.

Just because you put shit in a martini glass doesn't make it a martini.

I agree about that, although it has greatly expanded sales for the distillers so I guess it works for a lot of people. The first time I toured Woodford Reserve (great tour, by the way), they insisted that it was only proper to drink it neat, no ice or anything else. More recently they talk about all the different ways you can enjoy it, including in a manhattan or other mixed drink. I guess sales volume overwhelmed the purists!
