Bonus points (no pun intended) if you can explain what that electrical connector in the foreground of the picture connects to and why....

It connects to the condenser which stores a charge in order to deliver the spark as I recall, but it's been a very long time.

Winner!!!

The condenser provides an "easier" path for the electricity to flow in as the points pull apart. Prevents a spark arcing across the contacts and eroding them.

Phew....I was worried I was going to completely get it wrong. Funny how you question yourself on things you know but haven't had to think about for a while.

I kind of miss the days when an afternoon changing plugs and cleaning/setting points would add noticeable power and driveability (or swapping in $500 worth of headers/carb/manifold would almost double output). Then I realize that I'm now driving a car with tech that only the race teams had back then, with >125hp/liter, so it's a pretty cool trade off to let the computer fire the coils.

Yeah, you're so correct.

They are tuned to run optimally under nearly all conditions. The strangest thing I've noticed is that the M6 runs so much better after a fresh oil change and I only go 3-4K miles between oil changes on this new engine vs the original engine.

One of these in your glovebox would keep you off the side of the road. Only thing Blue-Point made that was any good. Their points certainly weren't.

Okay...

I remember the cassette tapes (I was born in 1990), and I know what ignition points are from working on a lot of older engines.

But what the heck are those?

Hahaha, thanks for making me feel like a dinosaur! Those are 8 track tapes. My first car had a 8 track player.

I yanked it out and tossed in a Jenson with cassette player. I was the man then!

Faulk I'm old. 8 Track tape. I had an 8 track in one of my early cars.....they were actually pretty good but because of the format the tape would stop mid song and rewind to then complete the song.

Get off my lawn! 8 track tapes! Damn I feel old. I guess you don't remember when you actually had to go to the bank and deal with tellers before money came out of machines...

I have a bank book somewhere that the teller would actually hand write the amounts and balances in it.

My wife and I still have quite the collection of cassettes and were playing some of them this weekend. Yes, we do have 2 CD/Cassette boom boxes.

Do you remember how busy the banks were the beginning of the month when the old people would come in to get their interest posted in their bank books?

I do, and I remember my father getting paid on Fridays (in cash) and walking to the grocery store and buying food for the week. The four of us would carry the food home and it was about $15.

I remember going to the Saturday movies, 50 cents to get it, and a candy bar was 25 cents.
