Depends.. here in germany the older BMW's are among the cheapest cars in their class.. (hore power per €)
I picked up my first car (a e46 320CI with 90.000km) for 3.500€.
A friend bought a worse Golf 5 for 7k ..

I have no income and paid for my car in advance with stimulus checks. As soon as the funds run dry, the car has to go.

I was just talking about this to someone.

For the remainder of the year I'm in a pretty well off neighborhood dominated by Subaru's, VWs, with American made trucks sprinkled in for good measure (with the exception of one Tacoma). If you're guessing that it's just like the Denver, Austin, Portland's of the world you'd be right. Just like that.

I'd imagine that any BMW parked in this neighborhood would be seen as too flash/showy because of it's perceived price tag.

Did I mention that most of the trucks clearly fall into the $70k+ range as configured?

In most major cities it doesn't take long for a cop to hit 6 figures. If you don't want to wait to put in the years and rank up the quickest route is a masters in public administration and OT.

Teacher's in blue states / cities are also comfortably and secretly in the 6 figure club. The average teacher salary in the city of Boston is around $95k (that's a 50k-150k range). And that's not even the highest average in the state of Massachusetts. With years of experience, professional development, and leading/coaching sports and clubs I know teachers in their 20s making $150k for 9 months of work (hard work no less). With 80% of that coming back ot them for life come pension time.

You'll rarely ever see a teacher or cop in anything fancy though. Regardless of what they make. My uncle is a retired detective. He bought a brand new e36 M3 and drove a Ford Mustang 5.0 to the station day in and out.

Why are teachers always bitching about pay then? They are overpaid and don’t even work full time!!!

I feel as though those are extremes. The median high school teacher salary looks to be about $62k. That figure seems to go up in major metropolitan areas (i.e. Boston), but not by much. The median high school teacher salary in Boston is about $70k, with those in the 90th percentile earning about $94k. So it would appear 6 figure incomes for teachers is a rarity.

Comically, I get called out daily on my Lexus and how everyone thinks it cost me a fortune, from people I work with. I got asked by one of the maintenance guys the other day, why I don't buy a truck. My response was two part - 1.) I can't afford one. (I make slightly more than median income for this area, my home is paid for and my monthly expenses are relatively low) and 2.) Why would I pay twice as much as I did for the Lexus to buy a truck when everyone I know has a truck. If I need to move or haul something, all I have to do is call anyone I know and borrow their truck.

A woman I work with just bought a new Ford Escape. She paid more that thing than I did for my Lexus.

Yep. My closest Jeep dealership's Grand Cherokees are $65k. Wagoneers are $83k to $88k.

Are BMWs really that different?

I feel like you could afford a lot more than an X5 if you were a narco in South America.

Nope. Unless you are talking about the ones who lease every 2-3 years and cross shop Lexus, Mercedes’, Audi, infinity, etc.

Or the ones who buy M3 new.

And like you I buy used. My first one, e34 wagon was 6k. The second one e46 wagon, 4K.
The current one was 20k but was only 4 years old and jsut out of warranty… not 10+Years out.

Now that my daily commute is 15 feet, I have no reason to buy another one until this one falls apart in 10+ more years.

Same. I was called out when I got out of my E90 at Home Depot by a couple that walked by. The gal made the comment "life must be rough driving a BMW". Meanwhile, they proceed to climb into a brand new $60k diesel.

My $12k E90 making people jealous. I love it.

I used to catch even more shit in my $10k E93. It's hilarious. People only see a brand and have no clue of market value.

Funnily enough almost any salary range these days get approved for premium car loans. I kind of feel I'm fortunate this wasnt the case when I was starting of my career - back then I was young AND stupid and probably would have gone under by pulling the trigger on a car way over my salary at the time if it was as easy to qualify as it is nowadays.
