McLaren's setup for Australia.

They desperately need Audi.

Merc are reportedly bringing another rear wing to Albert Park, one with a smaller mainplane which is surprising as it will generate less rear downforce at a track which requires a lot of it.
They wanted to use it in Jedda but wasn't ready in time.

Maybe this will allow them to run a lower ride height because the smaller rear wing will make less down force meaning less load on the rear axle (so less chance of porpoising), and the rear axle is where porpoising is induced on the Merc. This means they'll be able to rely on the more efficient floor for down force instead of the rear wing, resulting in less drag and higher top speeds.

It'll be a hit or miss but with less rear wing the floor is a tricky proposition with their previous efforts.

You're giving them way too much credit. That car is going to be hot garbage again.

I have no doubt it'll still suck unless they bring more parts. But a smaller rear wing will absolutely reduce drag, and reduce the down force on the rear axle allowing them to run Lowe before porpoising becomes an issue. That's why some cars stop porpoising when the drs flap is open, a smaller wing has the same effect.

Track info

Route length: 5.275 km

Number of rounds: 58

Race distance: 305.95 km

Lap record (race): 1:24.125 (Schumacher, 2004)

Pole position 2019 (absolute lap record): 1:20.486 min. (Lewis Hamilton, Q3)

Number of curves: 14 (5 left/9 right)

Distance pole to braking point for T1: 260 m

Pit lane length: 280 m

DRS zones: T2-T3 / T8-9 / T10-T11 / T14-T1

Tire types: C2 (Hard), C3 (Medium), C5 (Soft)

Safety car probability: 60% (last 5 Australian GPs)

Historically a one pit stop in the race, but with more abrasive asphalt and a widened pit lane, in which the speed has been increased from 60 km/h to 80 km/h, should also contribute to more strategy action. The drivers no longer lose as much time for pit stops.

Several tight corners and hard acceleration phases from slow corners, traction and braking stability were the main factors in Melbourne in the past. Driving was with a relatively soft suspension and a lot of ground clearance. New generation cars will require a different setup.

Adhesion is particularly important on the front axle. Understeer costs lap time. Good braking stability is also important.

Haas has no spare chassis for Australia after Schumacher crash

Steiner: "But there's no spare chassis, no safety net here, so they need to be careful. Otherwise we'll start again with one car!”

That's gonna be so dope! Can't wait to see it during show and tell.

But this will really push ferrari further ahead of their rivals, and I heard they have more power left untapped, they're just waiting to ensure their engine is reliable. If this is really true redbull will be left in the dust because that's the only thing they have on ferrari right now and merc will have no chance.

It also seems like there will be more power coming after Miami for Ferrari, they are using the first 5 races as reliability tests.

Quote:
The technicians say it in a low voice but Ferrari is sure to be the engineer who has recovered more power than last season, despite the introduction of E10 fuels. It seems that the Binotto team is also playing strategy, not wanting to show the true power of their unit at the beginning of the season. “We are more interested in finishing the reliability data collection program , at least until race 5 [Miami],” they let us know.
