He regretted cutting up his garden hose. My mother never hit me (not that I can really remember) She used psychology, the first order was wait till your father gets home, then you got to wait for it and dad used the belt and as I got older she would just tell me she was disappointed in me. It's funny, I'm almost 60 now and the thought of my mother being disappointed in me is like the benchmark for acceptable behaviour.

my dad would tell me 'son you have made a mistake punishment would be at 5pm( ie warning) . Once he bought roofing and myself and my sister thought it was funny to take a hammer to it as it made a nice sound when it cracked and he came back to find his whole expensive purchase broken. I owned up and spared my sister. She gave me the idea to wear thick denims. Those 10 cane lashings on my thighs didn't hurt as much. He was a wonderful dad. (i think he knew I had denims on).

Almost a Flanders type of family without the overly religious tone


My parents baby boomers 1957 never raised a hand to us, just gave us the eyes of shame, "we're very disappointed" in your actions. that's all we got, to us the eyes felt like laser beams

My adult twins now 20 and 14 year old son is/was raised sorta free range, so far so good

IMO, Free-range encourages problem-solving skills, promotes creativity, strengthens personality, and builds confidence. If they messed up I think they will learn from it on their own, a whooping isn't going to help much.

I do not like rules so much but I do have some, I told my boy never to disrespect girls, treat them how you would want a guy to treat your sisters, it's that simple.

I grew up in a loving family that believed in discipline when necessary. It was not often that it came to spanking, as I usually behaved in such a manner it was not required. When it was, my mom used the wooden spoon, and she would make me go get it... My dad used his hand until I was 5. I do not remember what I did, but mom thought dad should handle it when he got home. I knew what was coming, so I put my pocket knife in my back pocket to give a little protection. That was a huge mistake.... From then on, it was the belt.

The Golden Rule. I was lucky with my kids and didn't really have many disciplinary issues, although my youngest got his ass warmed a couple of times.
