I assumed this was obvious, but apparently not - statues are not history (except in the sense that the statues themselves are historical objects). They are symbols that the state erects to represent something. When those symbols stop representing the original meaning or when we don't want to represent said meaning any longer, it's sensible to take them down (and store in a museum if they indeed have historical value).

They are historical objects that remind us of history, the past, and that individual and their actions. So yes, they are arguably history.

What meaning have you ascribed to the statues that have been taken down, such that you would argue they have "stopped representing the original meaning"?

I don't buy it. I think you just dislike that your side is wrong in their actions and are trying to justify it.

And can you believe we let the Iraqis take down Saddam statues?

Confederate statues have been taken down, because they were erected for racist reasons and represented racism. Columbus statues were taken down because we used to think that colonialism is awesome and Columbus was the ultimate representation of that, and we don't think that anymore. Etcetera.
