airplane in the world. I still remember our take off from Bien Hoa (it required almost the entire runway), the seemingly shallow climb, passing over the coast and over the South China Sea. Once past the coast I could sense the relief. We landed at Honolulu for fuel, then on to Travis AFB, arriving in the dark. From there we were bussed to the Oakland Army Depot for about 24 hours of out processing. Home at last.

The most powerful aircraft engine in the world right now is the General Electric GE90-115B, which powers some Boeing 777s.
The GE90-115B has a carbon composite fan of 128-inch diameter, and the nacelle around the engine has a diameter of 166 inches. The engine weights 19,316 pounds and has a max thrust of 115,000 pounds. Even more powerful engines are under development, of course; technology never stands still.

That is interesting. The engine pylon of a 777 has to support that heavy engine on the ground, and a good deal more than that weight in flight during a pullout from a dive. And has to deal with the thrust generated by the engine, too. I'd call that an impressive piece of kit!

Although a pair of Pratt & Whitney J75 turbojets with afterburner powered the Canadair CF-105 Arrow Mk 1 version, a Mark 2 with an Orenda Iroquois engine was planned. The U.S. loaned Canadair a B-47 bomber for use as a test aircraft for the Iroquois, which was mounted on the right rear fuselage. Canadair dubbed the testbed the CL-52. The asymmetric result was a handful to fly.

That would be an understatement. The Iroquois engine was huge:

Tomcat Thursday!
A carrier air wing commander's F-14A aircraft seen from directly above -- and thus I can't tell which squadron or wing this belongs to.
