Mark, impressive shot of a sidewalk construction scaffold. I never would have thought of one as a subject. Very effective in B&W.

Ordinarily I would not waste my time on a crow/raven whatever it is, but beggars can't be choosers and I wanted to check the focus on the rented lens along with the 1.4. This is the MKI version of the 500. I rented the older version because that is what I am trying to buy used and I wanted to make sure I would be satisfied. I only lopped about 20% of this off. Wow. (1DIV BTW)

Remember with black birds, you need +1EV or more in order to bring out feather detail in the shadows. Hand held or tripod?

Great moon shot, Ed.
I rented a Canon 1.4x TC III this week to see how it compares to my Kenko 1.4x TC when paired up with my 400 f5.6. Testing starts tomorrow.

^^^Very cool shot Dave. This is the time of year for deer. I hope to get some more elk tomorrow. Here is the last test shot I will post. It was getting dark quick, but I managed to grab this guy as he swam out of the shadows on the creek. 700mm.

I saw an image today of a bald eagle shot from almost head on and the eagle was about to pluck a fish out of the water. You can even see the fish's fins. Was a 1D MkIV+500mm f4 IS+1.4x TC III for 700mm f5.6. If I had $10k, that'd be my rig.
Great shots, Ed. DC, will you take payments? (j/k)

Downy WP
This was shot with the 5D MkIII and my 400 5.6 + 1.4x TC III. You really need a lot of light to shoot with this rig or the ISO creeps up to detrimental levels. The WP here was in the shade on a sunny day and even that wasn't really enough light.

Just as a fun experiment I stacked all three TCs on the 400 5.6 and MkIII. This is 1568mm at f22. Even though these leaves are in bright sunlight, it still required ISO 5000 to get 1/2000 sec. Manual focus, of course. Still, pretty decent detail for so many stacked TCs. If I had a sitting bird to shoot, it might have come out ok. These leaves were a good 400ft or so away. I only cropped a bit to get to 4:3, so this is pretty much the full shot. If the clear skies hold out, I may try a moon shot tonight.

I would consider that, but only two or three, with someone I've known here for a while, like you.
