Nice, David. I like the color version better.

Sadly, I had to send the 500 back this morning. I wanted to pull back the box from the Fedex lady!

So would you say the 5D MkIII works just as well with the 500mm f4 as the 1D MkIV?

I have to say the quality and detail of the shots you've posted this weekend unequivocally blow away the bird/wildlife shots you usually post. (The shots of your X1 are always super clean and crisp). Not in terms of composition or anything, but purely from an equipment perspective, it's amazing how noticeable the difference is. Of course, considering the price of the 500, I should say I would have expected nothing less. I would rent a 1DX and the 500 and a TC but for the same price as renting all that I can probably find a used 100-400 to purchase, lol! |

That's what's killing me. I looked at renting a 1D MkIV for a week and thought the ~$300 could be put towards a MkIV instead of renting one.

The 500 was not cheap (not as bad as renting the markII would have been ), but I know I am not going to have twelve grand to spend on a lens anytime soon, and I had a four-day weekend at the height of raptor migration time, so I figured what the heck.
And as the results show, yeah, that extra reach makes a huge difference with critter shots. My arms feel like rubber right now though, as I was shooting handheld with that beast for three days. It will have to be a special occasion for me to do it again, but I wouldn't hesitate if I wanted the shots. In the mean time, I have been saving and keeping an eye on the used market. |

Thanks Ed. +1 on Dave's shot, pretty awesome. There's an even more awesome one in Dave's photostream as well that just blew me away.
I watch the sunrise with my 3yo daughter pretty much every morning, it's kind of our thing that we do. This morning when I came out, it was still dark and within minutes the heavy cloud cover started to have a really faint purple cast to it. I said, I better get the camera, and was really happy that I did. I shot another version that I need to stitch from 2 shots which will be a shift-panorama from the TS-E 17, will post it when I get it on Flickr. |

Nice shots, guys. Sunrise is that weird thing that happens early, early in the morning, right? Like 2 hours before I wake up? Or 4-5 hours after I go to bed? Never easy deciding whether to stay up for it or get up super early for it. So I usually opt for deciding later. ;-)
I'm glad someone is around to document them, though.

Nice details in the whites in full sun. That's hard to do.
