NASA is in the midst of modifying this former Japan Air Lines B777 into the organization's newest aircraft, replacing a retired DC-8.

I had an up close and personal look at the Tornado when my boyfriend at the time was an exchange Canadian pilot with the German Airforce stationed just north of Munich. Fascinating NOE technology and manual swept wings in earlier models. I think the design and technology put it ahead of its class at the time.

Saw a supervisor, of all people, turn an F111 onto the approach (~8 miles from the airport) 12K high (about 18K') and 420kts ground speed. The computer couldn't keep up with his descent rate, so instead of an altitude readout, all we got was XXX. The computer caught up with him and at about 3 miles and he was around 180Kts ground speed and on the glideslope altitude (about 5400').
Would that be a lawn dart? |

Remember the KAF A-4's parked under those "hail damage" revetments that had "Free Kuwait" painted on their sides? Ready to be flown by the Kuwaiti Air Force pilots..... juuuust as soon as they were done partying in Cairo. And the Scud Alerts? And the MOPP4 Alerts (in which everyone wore t-shirts and shorts and carried their mask bag)? Good times. R.

Australia's next airborne electronic warfare aircraft continues to undergo conversion and testing in the USA. The four Gulfstream MC-55A Peregrine aircraft will be operated by the RAAF's No. 10 Squadron and the first delivery is expected in late 2025 or 2026. At least one MC-55A is now flying in RAAF livery.

Tomcat Thursday again...
You can't engage an enemy unless you have the fuel to get to the fight, which is where the all-important tanker comes in. The Boeing KC-135 was the gold standard for many years, although now the KC-46A is coming on strong. From carrier decks, converted A-6 Intruder attack aircraft were used as KA-6D tankers for many years until retired about 20 years ago. Nowadays, F-18s refuel each other, although the unmanned MQ-25A carrier-based refueling aircraft is under development.

The Westland Whirlwind was an early twin-engine, single-seat fighter and first flew in 1938. The twin Rolls-Royce Peregrine V-12 engines proved troublesome in service and the RAF only equipped two squadrons with the type. The Whirlwind was characterized as a good handling fighter and had the heavy armament of four 20mm cannon.

This may be a re-post, but I ran across this RCAF CF-104 picture and thought that it was worth sharing even if it is.....

The Tomcat program also launched with TF30 engine which was never intended to be the primary or duty engine. It's unfortunate but Tomcat's Hollywood accomplishments (Top Gun) are recognized to be greater than it's operational successes. Blue Angels never flew F-14s due to expense and maintenance. The swing wings were also not helpful in close-order formations. 721 F-14 Tomcats were produced. F-4 - a predecessor: 5,195 units. F/A-18 Hornet: 1,479. Yet F-14 Tomcat will forever be viewed as a phenomenal aircraft ever built. |

An oldie, but still a goodie!
Paraphrase... British Airways, call sign Speedbird, landed at a German airport (I believe in the 60's) and got a little lost taxiing to his gate. The irate German controller chastised him and asked, rather indignantly, if he had ever been there before (I can't remember if it was Berlin or Dusseldorf). The pilot's response was "Yeah, in 1944, but we didn't stop! |

That's why I suspected that it could be a re-post.
Maybe a better question would be if the pilot was anyone that we know?????

This is one of my re-post from way back when. An awesome perspective.
439 Squadron CF-104 departing Lahr Germany ca. 1970's before they were repainted in dark camo green. Last edited by Lady Jane; 01-26-2025 at 07:46 AM.. Reason: Added info. |
