Take the time to squeeze some limes. Fresh juice is miles better than anything pre-packaged. If your recipe doesn't have egg white in it, get the fuck out.

Also, doing a reverse dry shake is completely worth the time and effort for the mouthfeel and presentation it brings to the cocktail.

Cheers!
Also - making your own simple syrup is super easy and doesn't take long. Always best if you know the source and process of your ingredients!

Prices may vary by region, obviously; but here are a few in my area:

Buffalo Trace: ~$20 (I get it for $18.99 on mil bases, but usually under $30 anyway)
Four Roses: ~$20
Larceny: ~$30
Eagle Rare: ~$30
Russell's Reserve 10 year: ~$30
Elijah Craig Small Batch: ~$30
Four Roses Small Batch ~$35
Barton's 1792: ~$35
Henry McKenna 10 year Bottled in Bond: ~$35
Jefferson's Very Small Batch: ~$40

Taste-buds also vary, but I would personally rate every one of the above as a better bourbon than Maker's.

Taste buds do vary but I don't think either of those Four roses are in the same league. Not a fan of buffalo trace myself but I know a lot are. The McKenna MSRP is over $40 now, the rest are good but definitely not "significantly better".

The only one I would possibly put in that category would be OGD114.

BTW - if you like Russels 10y, I believe Target sells it for $23 a bottle as their normal price. For that it is a great daily drinker.

Plus, I must say your price ranges seem odd on the Makers too. I can get the Makers for $22 and the Makers 46 for $37, which I would put the 46 above just about everything on your list. Talking in the $40 price range, I also get Wild Turkey Rare Breed, which for me tops the 46 also.

Well, when you're allowing for a 30% price variance, I'm not sure that really qualifies for "the same" money. But to your list:

I'll agree that tastes vary, and what you prefer is likely different from what I prefer.

I'd argue that most of those bourbons listed aren't objectively "better" than Maker's. Some are, most are not. I prefer Eagle Rare to Maker's, but I'd take Maker's over BT all day. I'd put Four Roses yellow label below Maker's, same with Larceny, IMO.

Wow... I agree Four Roses Small Batch isn't in the same league as Maker's Mark, I just think we are in opposite directions of what that means...

I just bought a bottle of McKenna for $23 two weeks ago; like I said regional prices vary a lot.

No liquor or beer can be sold in Target/Walmart/etc in my state, only licensed liquor stores.

Agreed 100%! Do people actually buy simple syrup?

Excellent call on the OGD114. When you can find it, state min here is ~$25, I think. Screaming bargain at that price, IMO.

You bought McKenna BiB for $23 recently? I was sure they raised prices across the country after they won that gold medal.

Good on you, if you did. I bought a bottle in Nov at the local Costco for $38, I think.

That bottle of Parker's 8 year rye I just bought was $150.

Once again, prices vary widely by region... Maker's is $35 around my area in most places. I can get it cheaper on base, but again, why would I want to when I prefer so many other bourbons over it.

I haven't tried OGD114 but I'll look for it.

I went with the price you quoted "sub-$30". In my area Maker's is ~$35 to begin with so not a big price variance.

So now we are trying to quantify "better."

IMO Jim Beam and Jack Daniels are the Coors and Budweiser of bourbons, and Maker's is the Michelob. Cheap, mass-produced, and bland/sweet without any real character. That means it is repeatably well-produced, but definitely not "better" than any of the products I listed.

I'd even take Bulleit over Maker's, as a mixer it's a much better flavor profile.

Guess we'll all have to agree to disagree. As long as you have a good every-day bourbon you like to drink, I'll just say "cheers"

And yes, McKenna BiB for $23. Last one I could find though; haven't seen it on any shelf since unfortunately...

Exactly my point, my friend. Exactly.

MGP Bulleit or their own in-house juice?

Enjoy it. It went from ~$25 here to ~$40 this year.

It was a great bottle at $25. Much less so at $40.

Generally lemons don't exist in much of Latin and South America.

I agree with this. I cannot find it under $40 anywhere anymore, at $23 I would snatch it up.

I'll have to take a up-to-date pic of my whiskey shelf and post it up tonight.

Couldn't agree more, they have no taste profile. I find with Canadian whiskeys they are affordable like the lower end bourbons but they still have a flavour profile, different from scotch but nice I their own way.

Canadian Whiskey is my preference any day. It is absolutely smoother than American. Some prefer the bite of American whiskey and that's cool. I went through my days of Weller and Jack back in the say. But I seek out either very Smooth and even sweet these days. But I've been drinking for over 30 years too.
If you want a real pleasant whiskey try Collingwood. It is REALLY good.

Santa was good this year and brought this bottle. Its a beautiful bottle, sandblasted and crazy bell cover.

Anyone ever try Clase Azul Durango?

I like mezcal but have never had anything like this. I'll start off neat and see how it goes it just seems too good to mix...

That is cool and I would definitely savor this neat. The only thing I might possibly mix with it is a little Arrogante if you’re having this after dinner:
