1911. I learned on a 1911 and I competed with a Colt .45 70 Series Gold Cup back in the day and every gun since then is measured against it for good reason: it's the best damn handgun in the world. I've won many many competitions with it in the past and nothing has really compared to it since.
I've been searching for a home defense gun and I tried the the Glock 21 and Sig P220 and the triggers felt like garbage next to my current custom Colt 70 Series 1911. Just when I was about to give up I tried a HK USP45 Expert and it was a huge relief. I thought pistol manufacturers forgot what good out of the box trigger felt like. The HK is cheaper than a quality 1911 so if you don't want to splurge yet, try the USP45. I think it will be my next gun.

Check out AR500 for black friday deals on plates and carriers. Make sure to read the plate sizes.
We’re going to finish building my son’s 13th birthday present today and take it out for a test fire. He wanted a .458 SOCOM for his 13th so I got all the parts in. Ammo is in. So we’re ready to shoot this thing. |

Source: me. Nothing I have ever fired (including my 12 gauge shotgun and my .338 lapua) has bruised my shoulder, except for my AR chambered in .458 SOCOM.

I shot 11 rounds and broke my name tag. I forgot to take pics, I did take a quick vid of one of my coworkers who wanted to shoot it. My shoulder didn't hurt much since I was wearing body armor but .458 does kick! Maybe I will install an H3 buffer for my son.

I will add, that the .458 is my new favorite deer round. I have shot 5 deer with it so far and no major meat damage and not a single deer wiggled again after being shot. It is like the reaper sucked the life out of them. Really like the Burris eliminator III scope on it now. Helps turn this rifle into a 300yrd deer killing machine. |

I’ve never fired a .458 but it has nearly the same amount of recoil energy as a heavier 7mm RM and that’s not too bad. I have the 7 in an A-Bolt and it will leave a nice bruise if I say shoot a full box just wearing a t-shirt but I’ve gotten thumped by worse.

I own both calibers and the 7mm rem mag kicks way worse to me with the two setups I have. My AR is heavier than my browning A-bolt and with it being a semi auto and having a heavy buffer the .458 has more of a pushing recoil where as the 7mm is a sharp kick. I think it depends on the build. I would imagine a .458 bolt gun would kick pretty hard especially if it was around 6lbs in weight.
