The root cause lies in 2 separate parts:

- BMW relaying component specifications to Pierburg AND specific testing procedures
- Pierburg performing these tests for BMW

It's doubtful that extensive testing has been done to simulate a range of problems for this specific water pump. The risk of common problems is typically eliminated by good collaborative design techniques ... until these design techniques miss a few things. Component failure testing is expensive (because it often involves creating a test with multiple components working together), time consuming, and for a relatively inexpensive component it's rarely done.

To echo prior comment about Bentley problems, hot weather testing would easily reveal the problem of rear window falling out of the convertible top. Many car manufacturers do perform hot weather testing in Arizona testing. But - did the tests include "leave it in the Scottsdale parking lot for a few days" scenario?

I wonder if this company supplied the electric pump for the intercooler on the B58.

The water pump on my E92 335i 2007 failed at 135 000 km ( 84 K miles), so no big deal

I'm not sure what's more amusing- all the comments from people that have no idea what this coolant pump actually does, while not even owning a model relevant or the fact that the picture on the cover for the news shows a heater control valve. Not to mention this recall has been out almost 6 weeks. Every registered owner would've had a letter in the mail long before now.

Either way this is an easy fix people, chill out. Also I like how no one has realized this is the same pump recalled many years ago after the same type of failure was a possibility.

You'll know if it goes bad, the car will set a check engine light and/or show an overhead check control message. This is just the over run pump for the turbos, which runs after the engine is off to cool down the turbos for longevity. There's still a belt driven coolant pump and another electric pump for the intercooler circuit.

I'm sure they have some input but I think the extent of that is aesthetics (size) but just reading Pierburg's webpage seems like they already have teh technology and just scales it to what the manufacturer (BMW) wants. I really don't think that BMW designs/engineers the water pumps just like they don't design/engineers turbo's - they get a manufacturer for it buys it from them.

Sure...but I don’t buy products from one of those companies. I’m buying a BMW, on #7 now. So if your name is on the hood, you better be damn sure that the contents you sub-contracted out are worthy of the marquee.

You know this is a supplier issue, right? Like most car manufacturers BMW doesn't build its own water pumps. Just like the Takata airbag debacle affecting BMW, Honda, Toyota, Chrysler and Ferrari vehicles.

What's even crazier is we have a e90 328i xdrive that has 135k and on its original water pump lol. I think I hit a world record
