I've been reading up some of the of the lens reviews on FD, looking into possibly getting an L lens...

Get it, you won't regret it..one of the best is the new 70-200 F/4 L with IS..bar-none the sharpest quality on a non-prime L

I've read about this lens and have pretty much choose it as my next purchase. It should be a good companion to the Canon EF 28-135MM f3.5-5.6 IS USM I recently purchased. I'm just on the fence about the image stabilization. I can get the non-IS lens for 450 while the IS is 650+. Not sure if the IS is that great.

edit: left out the 1 before the 650, would have made my point more obvious...

Read this review and you'll see the difference besides the 2 besides just the IS. Also, I have had both and with the IS it's defintely much more useable in lowlight condition. IN situation when I can only shoot 1/250 at F/4 now I can do 1/30 and still get a steady shot (with lower ISO)

Or you could purchase a good tripod. I don't really like the VR on Nikon Lenses assuming cannons IS is pretty much the same it's not 100% reliable and I can get better results with my bogen/manfrotto.

Matt try the same exposure right after the sun goes down. There is a 15min sweet spot if you catch it just right you will not get the washed out headlights.
I have posted this before but this is what I mean. This photo had very little post processing and the human eye could never capture these vivid colors. The lens absorbs light and creates a photo that’s well unreal.

thanks Diesel. I will try that. I just happened to be in a photo mood when I went searching for places to take pics.
The problem with that same exposure (assuming same location) right at sundown is that the traffic will be MUCH MUCH heavier, and the increased light pollution will ruin the shot. =(

But the VR/IS is great in those situations where you dont have your tripod with you for some reason

I love my manfrotto, but the roller leg locks get annoying. I wish I had clips instead.

Yeah, those are really cool. Maybe alittle to much light at the top of the first photo.

no offense but your picture is def. over exposed. You could have used either smaller aperature or shorter shutter speed.

just a thought..

It's overexposed only in the one spot where all the oncoming lights pointed right at my camera.

I HAD to use the exposure I used, because with EITHER a faster shutter or a narrower aperture, I lost the sky. I was at my max shutter speed, so I couldn't stop down....

to each his own but i still argue with your exposure. it wasnt only one spot..well if you call it one spot, its a one BIG spot.

i guess i am not good enough to give you a good advice but post it on forums like fredmiranda. i am pretty sure you'll get the same response. i am saying this only to help improve your skill.

edit* maybe its not about overexposing but your editing.

I can't see your picture, it's a red x...

And I understand that my freeway pic is not well exposed. I appreciate your feedback. I'm just saying that I did the best I could for the situation...

If I were you, I would of took 2 shots to achieve the picture you wanted so that you wouldn't have the cars over exposed. 1 picture so you could have the sky the way you wanted, and one where the cars weren't over exposed. You could easily photoshop it using layer masks it wouldn't take you that much longer, you'd still have to go through all your basic post-processing..
