This is a very old phenomenon. A physics prof here showed me a PowerPoint with these two slides ages ago. Same colors. The top of the image shows a "gray" chiclet on a blue background and the bottom shows a "white" chiclet on a goldish background. Note that colors are the same as the dress picture options. Folks seeing black and blue on the dress are actually seeing dark gray and blue.




The two chiclets in the image above are identical in color. They're both the same level of gray. If we cover up the surrounding colors, you'll see this is true.




White balance is a funny thing. It's been driving photographers nuts since color photography was invented.

I saw this same representation on Brain Games. Neat stuff, but it makes you sit back and look at the dress that started this thread and think...., it took probably two 13 year old girls at the mall to start a debate to make people find this new obscure oddity.

Leeches is an excellent way of putting it. Real science is difficult to learn. Real science is cool as shit but these people aren't interested. I feel like its the Imitation Game every time Lups posts.

But happily, I have a solution to the problem. What must be done is the following:

1. An international coalition is formed (I say international because I'm Canadian and wish to participate in this otherwise U.S. coalition).

2. This coalition's mission statement is to abolish the further mangling of the English language by foreigners (which can be expanded later to include the term "idiots" since half of North America also seems to struggle in putting a sentence together).

3. To prevent the mangling mentioned above, and as an incentive for such foreigners to actually read and apply a foreign language X to English dictionary to their statements, their cars will be taken from them and held by the coalition.

4. Once they have demonstrated a proper understanding and use of the English language, their cars will be returned to them with "normal" wear and tear from the use by the coalition.

As self appointed president of this new coalition, I will happily hold Lups car in my possession while she learns the intricacies of the English language. The other coalition members simply have to deliver it to me.

Lups, please surrender your car.

I can relate to that question. A friend of mine broke up a few weeks ago with her boy toy and I got to be the official cheer up shopping buddy. I learned a lot, mainly that honest commenting is really not wanted and the factors women put into a damn dress are so stupid no wonder they have nothing to wear.

Our lives are almost identical, 3/4 I too have from your list. I would consider your life perfection so congratulations Billie!

I haven't crossed over to the ot for a while since nothing seems to be going on here. No controversy, no fighting, hell a blank paper would be a picture enough for the thread about this place. Unfortunately I haven't had anything to contribute either.

This dress BS is one of those things that makes it embarrassing to be an American. The frigging story is front page news EVERYWHERE. WTF? Like there aren't more important things in the world going on? It makes me wonder what else is happening that we're all missing while we decide which color the stupid dress is. Some idiotic laws are being passed that we'll only learn about down the road when they bite us in the ass.
