The big moment for me was when my eyesight started going in my early 40's. I'd always had perfect vision both near and far, especially far. But then in my 40's I found myself not being able to see things up close. That got so bad I soon needed glasses to read. Now I need glasses all the time. Trifocals at that.
Now that I'm older I consider almost everything critically. I'm very careful about how much I drink, how much sleep I get, how fast I drive, etc. I'm also always running what I'm about to say through my head a few times to make sure I don't regret saying something. That goes triple for email. I don't miss clubbing or hanging out with friends till all hours. Wifey and are DINKs, so we live comfortably and pretty much just have ourselves to ourselves. And that's fine with me because she's my best friend. We enjoy being together. I do wish I'd stayed in better shape. I keep resolving to exercise more and really need to get to it before it's too late. Shoveling that snow this weekend and ending up with a sore back just drove home the point that I can't stay in shape without exercise like I was able to do when I worked at a more active job. The year I worked for UPS was better than a year spent at a gym. There's a reason you don't see fat UPS guys. ![]()

A forever good friend has bought 7 acres in Belize and is putting together the build/contractors for his home and greenhouse. He's a smoker since birth I think. Costa Rica for myself. Gold coast...awesome waves. Hotter than vulture piss much of the year when it's not raining. Central upper mountain is the best weather but boring as hell.

I will break this up into 2 answers.
I started feeling like a mature adult when my daughter was born (33 y/o). The enormity of the moment hits like a ton of bricks when you realize that you are now completely responsible for another life. I started feeling a bit older when I stopped healing as quickly and when the orthopod told me that the hips have gone nearly as far as they could go. Prior to that I still felt 18 in every way. Ahem...every way. The main piece of advice that I will provide is to do everything with passion, do things for those less fortunate (YOU PERSONALLY, not the gov't), and never skimp on the following: 1. Shoes - you only get 2 feet. 2. Sunglasses - you only get 2 eyes 3. Ear protection - you only get 2 ears and though things can be amplified, there is nothing like the real thing. 4. Get a really good mattress. You will spend about a third of your life sleeping. Skills: 1. Learn to drive well. If you don't live in a megalopolis, you will spend a good deal of your life driving. 2. Learn another language. (A huge failure of mine...2 years of private french lessons and I only know a smattering of phrases) 3. Learn math. No explanation necessary. Lastly: Always take time for kids. They never forget it. (Bend down to their level, adults are giants to them and it makes them feel like equals.) Tell everyone you love that you love them as often as possible. Cheers-mk |

That peace of mind in Germany came from being unplugged. I didn't know or care what was going on outside my own world. That has an amazingly calming effect on your psyche. ![]()

As a guy who had not exercised for the past 10 years, all i can say is, Do it! I've recently lost some excess and gained a fair amount of fitness in a short time. It feels excellent, like absolutely fabulous. It was such a relief to see my heart respond so well. Pretty substantial drop in BP and huge drop in resting HR. I've been encouraging everyone over the last month or so to start a regular exercise program. Took me about 2 months of 2 - 3 hours a week before i started looking forward to my exercise time, but now as soon as i'm done with one workout, i'm looking forward to the next. Hell, i jumped on the treadmill this morning for 25 min because i woke up a little early feeling refreshed. If there is one place most everyone can use a change it's getting fit. So worth the change in scheduling and time investment. It's debatable whether or not you'll live longer, but you're sure to live better while you're here if exercise is a regular part of your routine.

When I turned 40. It kinda hit me that I am "middle aged". But I distinctly remember almost this "sense of being and drive" unlike I ever felt before. I am now 45 and very fortunate with good health, beautiful wife of 15yrs+, 2 beautiful boys, a business, and just about all that a man with goals could want. I will add this... I also feel like time is "moving very rapidly"!

Last week I realized I'd joined the army 39 years ago that day. I can't believe next year will make 40. Oy.

at 30 you realize the days of 60s 400m are long past as are 5min miles (most likely anyway) at 40 you realize that slight muscle pull or rolled ankle take forever to heal. at 50 getting injured is easier to happen and yes, it still takes forever to heal. I still play soccer 3-5 times a week and cycle 1-2k miles a year. To answer the original question, I would say 50 is when I really felt older as I'm more likely than not past my half way point. I didn't feel that way at 40. |

I've been lucky, haven't slowed down much at all physically wise. I still workout two hours a day, eat right, and stay faaaar away from sugar, junk food, and alcohol. Still play ball 3-4 nights per week with the high school kids, and still livin life above the rim at 39 years old hah. Helps that I'm 6'4 too, but whatever. Took this pic last October a couple months after turning 39. No plans on stopping anytime soon!!

I'm seriously careful about drinking for just this reason. I get hangovers on waaaay less booze and they kill me now. Although it's been years since I've had a bad one. But even overdoing it a little will make me feel like crap the next day.

Kids are the killer. Most middle to upper middle class women today have little to no home skills or parenting skills so the average guys I know are pulling a full time job, cooking, taking care of kid number 1, doing what they can to help with kid 2 and nursing their missus through the mental hardship of child rearing.
Cue massive weight gain and feeling old. |

THIS! Expect mine went in my mid 30's. I had outstanding vision and played a lot of racquet and ball sports, within 6 months i lost so much of my hand-eye co-ordination that i started plummeting in my squash league. Wearing glasses is a bitch, it never feels right.
