I really like this design. I would hope this is the next gen i3!!! This would continue with the current design language and expand the i3 in length a bit since its really compact. Then they can slot in a smaller version and call it the i2

BTW, they need to keep the front grill of the i5 looking more like the i8. Same with the bumper treatment front and rear and they have a winner! And despite what others have said, the i cars should retain the blue accent since it sets it apart from the ICE cars. I like the subtle blue. For those that don't, just go aftermarket. I'm sure someone will make black out stickers or grills for you guys.

From early impressions if you look at the Vision Efficient Dynamics on how it was a select sedan in that it had ample space for four against the more shortened but inherited i8. Well this is carried over as it will be to carry passengers unlike the i8.
There is deliberation especially when it comes to the door apertures for production. A forthcoming concept will illustrate ideas but not necessary the final choice. Also under deliberation is the grille in which it might feature a Vision Next 100 which is shorter in width but longer in length over a grille longer in width than length. The Grille is mainly the character but of the i8 and i3 is not entirely functional.
It's true the more aerodynamic language of the i8 is inherited but there is also overtones of ideas shown from the outline of the Vision Next 100. Make no mistake but they really want to be radical with this car in both exterior and interior similar to the i8's cutting edge persona. It will also bring forth advancements in Autonomous driving. It's what I am involved with just now at one of its "off site" conceptual centres spread across the world.

I want one with that front end unchanged. Reminds me of a Veyron.
I was going to buy/lease a Model 3 anyway.
I have a 335, X5, Dodge Magnum and a Fiat 500e.
The 500e is a lease that's going back next year.
Since I've already paid for the Level 2 charger anyway. From now on, I'll at least have one E-Car in my driveway.

Maybe if they were horizontal, they would look better. The vertical lights looks strange.

Scott - you need to tell them to ditch that ugly vertical grill style. The more flattened wide grill is sleeker in appearance and blends much nicely with the headlights. This would carry the design language over much better. The UGLY CSL Concept Grill is what killed the looks of that car, not the aero or nasty yellow color . Even tho the kidney grills on the i cars are non-functional, they should never go away. Its part of the lineage/DNA that makes a BMW a BMW just as much as the roundel and/or emphasis on chassis and driving dynamics.

What about my comment about the mini EV in 2019 and the all EV SUV X3 coming in 2020?
The info is from Norvegian BMW CEO i belive.
The Jag SUV is coming late this year, Audi brings an EV SUV next year, MB also. BMW needs to get down to EV business fast. I own a i3, and love it to bits, and want to expand my BMW EV portefolio, Norway is ready for it

I love this render too, but as many I'm not sure about the front.

Used to hate the looks of my i3. Now love its front, but still have issues with the back. Totally love it though!

I also have a Model S, but would easily swap it with an i5 looking like this

Keep in mind one of the things that made the Tesla Model S so successful compared to other electric car attempts was that (at least from the outside) it looked like a "normal" sedan. It is also very functional with hatch and storage. Not everyone appreciates the interior design but I do (aside from the material quality) but the simplified touchscreen tech is miles ahead of BMW.

The need for auto manufacturers to label electric cars as the "future" and design Jetson-like cars around this concept is what is holding back some of the adoption of EVs. Electric cars are also very "now" so design something that looks current but fresh with a compelling electric drivetrain and sell a lot of cars. Even the Model 3 - as "boring" as that design may be - combines a proven drivetrain with a neutral design which obviously led to an unprecedented sales response.

In other words... if I were helping run the i-division (dare to dream?), the i8 would be the stunning "supercar", an i6 would look like that rendering (only better), and the i5 would look more like a practical sedan you could drive to the office and to pick up kids at school. More like a current 5-series but with i-branded styling.

Let me know if you need my resume - and do I need to learn German?

That car looks spectacular, in the opinion of this Architect. I would buy that in a heartbeat when it rolls out if it looked like that.

The front looks good but I want proper headlights, the back needs work, get rid of the Chevy Volt taillights.
But how much$$$
The Tesla model 3 starts at 35000$.I doubt this will be in that range.

The problem is this is due in FOUR (4) years! LOL!

In 4 years time Tesla will have 4 years under its belt with Model 3 and already have their refined redesign up to bat. The Model S will be replaced with a clean sheet redesign and new tech plus autonomous driving will already have been in them for years prior giving Tesla a massive head start.

BMW's timeframe here is very poor. They probably have done very little R&D on this car thus far and it is largely vaporware. Release details of a car that will start production in almost half a decade. BMW is very much behind the curve and I'm disappointed to see a vaporware announcement like this in 2017.

By the time 2021 rolls around technology will be so far ahead and design language as well this won't be the car rolling off the line.

I'm sure someday BMW will get there but competition has a massive leap ahead in terms of pure EV's

A Tesla looks like a normal car. Stop this "standout looks futuristic electric car". Just make a BMW i5 which is different than a 5 series and more like a sleeker 6GC Mated with an I8 where the 6GC is the inspiration and build that. i3 is typical geeky electric and I8 is radical electric.
