well, to some people, it does matter, as you can see. i think it is mostly because some members here do use moves on other members like "you shut the f up, you only have XXX posts and i'm bigger than you." so, if someone with 300+ posts that has only been here for a month or less would say something like that to, let's say, enroutte, we would have to explain to them that she is, in fact, a very respected member and they should first take a cold shower and then open their mouth...

It's the same reason why people are so conscientious about the number of friends they have on myspace/friendster/facebook. Post count may also give them a pretentious feeling of seniority.

The whole post count ordeal is actually an interesting one that could probably be put on Freakonomics. I am more than certain that if the whole post-count concept (along with rank) was extirpated from the beginning, less people would be inclined to post and the only ones who continue to post would be the ones who are actually involved in discussions/debates/inquiries.

I was on another site where the post count problem got so bad, they removed it all together. The only way you could figure out how many posts someone had was to look at their average # of posts per day and multiply times the number of days they had been a member. They still kept the ranking categories, so you could still get an idea of how many posts someone has within a range, but no specifics.
