So I asked a stupid question. I'm sorry, I had a brain fart. I know a lot of new cars come with built-in WiFi, and that was partly in my mind. To the person giving me crap for worrying about overages and driving an $80k car ... there is a reason people came afford nice things, it's partly because they are smart with their money and don't like wasting it on things like overages. Many of the wealthiest people in the world are cheapskates. I know Warren Buffet would be pissed if he got charged data overages. Having money is not the point, it's using it wisely. So please give me a mulligan on this and back off. I've never had a car with Pandora on it and asked a stupid question. There is no need for everyone to attack me. We all love BMWs here, why are some always trying to pick a fight? Let it go.

OP: I used Pandora a lot before Spotify emerged. It's my opinion that Spotify does better at job at matching music interests via their radio. If you are willing to pay $10/mo for premium you can actually save all the songs you like to be played offline. If you listen a lot you can spend a little to save more.

Probably - I'm not familiar with your model. But when I connect on my E92 M3 via iPhone & USB the Spotify app launches into a Connected mode and iDrive recognizes it. You can skip and save tracks from the iDrive.

Once you confirm the connection between your phone and car via BMW connect, app will appear on idrive under radio (older version idrive) or connected phone. Once you click on the app on the idrive, it will pull out an interface with your settings from your phone such as track list/favorite channels and etc.

You don't need to.
Everything goes through your phone for these music apps, that is why it counts into your data use. If it is Pandora or Spotify. You don't need to go through yet another app, why make it harder? T-Mobile doesn't count Pandora, Verizon does still. I have both T-Mobile and Verizon so I know from experience. Even if you use BMW Connected it will still count into your data. If you are using your phone and it uses 4G LTE, it will count into your data usage. Unless they state otherwise like T-Mobile w/ Pandora. That is something most people should know. Especially if you are an IT, that should be something elementary to you.
