No contest for me. E46 M3 all the way, although the new Speed3 is really good.

(btw did my best to find a pic of a modded speed3 but they're rare apparently)

got the mazda 3 for my sister and its a great car to zip around town in. more than enough power for its size. handles pretty well too.

just depends how much he wants to spend and what he really wants out of the car. both cars are totally different. if he's leaning towards the MS3 then he probably doesn't care for looks/attention/power all that much but rather a reliable car to get from point A to point B.
