A serious question, why do we need self driving cars? Do we need them or is it just to prove it can be done?

I wonder what impact this has on the deal Uber and Volvo made.
Its a deal that involves 24.000 cars.....

Then why have a "captain" in the driver's seat?

I mean I was raised under the world of mechanical will always be reliable, and fly by wire is just that......

Guess what I'm saying is we as a society have become sooooo dependent on electronics doing everything for us, the simplest of things have become void to most.

I believe they have a person there to take over because they are testing it. That doesn't mean the driver can prevent every possible accident just because they are there, just like we can't when driving non-autonomous cars.

Because people can be dumb as shit. We make mistakes all the time. Eliminating human drivers from the road will make it safer for everyone. Self driving cars will be more efficient at driving. In the bustling world of technology and multi-tasking (constantly see people on their phones while driving despite laws prohibiting it), we’re going to want to free up our time commuting to and from work, or wherever it is we’re going.

But yeah, I think we need to get the full details of how the accident happened.

the headline will influence your opinion if you aren't very objective. this could still be 100% the pedestrian's fault. i'd be interested in seeing what the investigation reveals.

I personally like the idea of having a vehicle on demand. My car sits dormant 95% of the time, depreciating. I much prefer to free up the capital to be more productive with it.

But the bottom line as to why we're getting this tech is because billions of dollars will be made.

Yeah i head that on the news this morning and they said she was not in the cross walk. They are not sure if the car tried to stop or when she actually stepped into the car's path. These systems generally are very good at avoid objects in the road, but they can not determine if someone is paying attention and plan to cross into the cross when they should not. System like these have to assume things follow a set of assuming and one of them is humans would not cross in front of moving car. ie people are not stupid.

I personal have been driving down a road and saw things which did not seem right and began to slow just in case, some time I am wrong but a number of times I avoid what could have been bad.

One time say kids playing ball in the yard and saw the ball coming towards the street and the ball roll under truck and the kid ran around the opposite of the car from my travel direction and pop out into the street. I had already slowed down and was not any where close to the kid. Do you think these system and figure that out.

Looks like the lady darted in front of the car which was going below the speed limit.

Media bringing up headlines about the driver being a previous felon as if that bears any relevance.

And the media wonders why people don't trust them anymore?

This is much ado about nothing. I'm more on the anti-autonomous car side, but I also like to be objective. This was blown out of proportion before the facts came out.

Report this morning concluded that the woman darted in front of the car, which was actually driving below the speed limit.

The media is putting up headlines about how the driver of the vehicle has a criminal record, as if that bears any relevance. And the media wonders why it is no longer trusted?

This was much ado about nothing.
