I say 2 cars and find a fun DD but a have a second one that gives you a raging hard on every time you see or think about it. At the end of the day my decision was:

M3 ZCP for my DD
ZR1 for going full retard
Or you can have all that in your DD with the Hellcat. I bought it over another Vette because I wanted to be able to get my $ worth by being able to drive it all year. Already picked up snow tires for it. Once the Jetta sells, the Hellcat will be full time DD.
I love the Hellcat Charger. Thing is, I love Vettes and how they sound. My 800+ rwhp ZR1 walks all over damn near everything, too include Hellcats, lol. But I totally get why you got it.

There is purity in buying your dream car and driving the hell out of it. Is there a place for people to own multiple cars for leisure? Sure...if they are from different eras (e.g. classic car...maybe like your 993 although it's not old enough for me to call a classic car yet).

I do find things to be uninspired when people buy a car like a new 911 or M4 or whatever and then drive a Civic to work...pitiful! Most people who do that sell their "pleasure car" after a couple of years as they've formed no actual bond or affinity for it—-because they never used it!

Lastly it is easy to well maintain 1 car. You can follow any issues closer and with more attention. When one drives a car a lot it feels like you're fully invested in it—-never feels like that with multiple cars (and yes I've owned multiple cars at the same time in the past).
Or because we like playing with all the toys, not just one.
Understood. The one car "all/in" approach isn't for everyone. For me it gives me clarity and simplicity. Just offering my opinion/counterpoint.

im no help, my 2 cars are an e30 with a motor swap and roll bar, and an e90 m3 daily. I tried and tried to be content with a practical daily driver, but in the end all i did was waste money on new cars that i wouldnt keep more than 2 years...

The other thing I'd say is that I own an old home and a boat, so I require a vehicle (DD) that I can put roof racks on to haul lumber and various other building materials plus all the shit for my boat. Your 1M wouldn't hack it, neither would my 993, my DD has to somewhat utilitarian.

I would have way more cars if I had a bigger garage or more convenient parking! M3 is the daily, but the old car comes in handy for a quick errands or leaving at the airport, etc

Multiple cars is definitely more convenient and ideal. This allows you to go back and forth between cars, giving you the freedom and option to driving what you want. At that point, insurance costs aren't a limiting factor as only you know what you can afford / what's reasonable.

I really want a project Rx7 car...

you always have a back up if there is 2 in the barn
A one for winter and one for summer is a reasonable division of resources

Personally went through this a thousand times... The scenario I would play out was keep the f80 or buy an s2000 and an older gen Raptor...I was going crazy running this scenario through my head every day.

But at the end of day I really didn't need a Raptor and an s2000 I believe would've not brought the smiles the F80 does. So with that I finally was able to put it to rest. Although I still find myself looking for s2000s... Lol

So to answer your question... It sounds like you're problem is you need a car that you will love more... Whether that is a one or two car formula that's a different story.

I like the two car plan because I can enjoy one and the other one I don't mind putting miles on. Also helps with clients some appreciate signs of success while others want to see something frugal and humble.

I always have a second car, and if you are like me you are always looking although I hope I've landed on the forever car with my 993. I love some of the cars you suggest and you need to get what fits your needs, but if you love the stick there are some great older cars out there, and some of them are holding value and hopefully appreciating any air cooled Porsche, 1M BMW for example. Good luck.

I'm a 3-4 car guy...

Golf Sportswagon DD
E92 M3 Weekend Warrior
E39 Cruiser
Mk2 GTI Project

This being said, I would go for two cars.

Replace the M240i with something practical, maybe a Golf R or something similar.

Buy a manual, hardcore car for the fun, and because it is a M3 forum I would recommend an M3 hahahaha

I understood, that you would like something practical, that you can lend to your girl, which would make the choice to go with a 2nd car easier.

I’m a two car guy, I run a personal daily (M3) and a work daily (2018 Nissan QASHQAI). Works out well since I run my own business. Basically I drive the M3 much of the time, and the QASHQAI when I’m headed to jobs (photography/video).

Doesn’t seem like much of a choice, you want something your girl can drive and you enjoy manual.

I'd roll with Option 1 personally.

My motto has always been that life is too short to worry about practicality. You'll figure out how to make things work even if it won't be as easy.

Cars are expensive and are a multiple year time commitment, so you should get exactly what YOU want and will enjoy each and EVERY single day.

One car to rule them all has always been my mindset.

Unless you do BIG miles during the week for work it really isn't worth it.
First, with 2 cars you have double expense of car tax and insurance and servicing.
Second, I really couldn't live with knowing I had a great drivers car and then leaving it behind every day to drive some poxy replacement to work and back. 2 cars just doesn't work for me.
Granted, there are some who need a diesel to commute and that would be less expensive overall, but then those of us who worship at the altar of the sportscar do do as a hobby and therefore shouldn't mind the expense. If you *do* care about the expense then just buy a diesel car and keep that as your only car.
For me, there's no sensible middle ground. Buy the car you want (and can afford) and have that as your regular car.
Here endeth the lesson on being a petrolhead.

Yours Aye

If you are talking owning a great car - one you want to drive, while also owning another rubbish car you drive more often, then just own the one car.

If you can afford 2 great cars - then great. 2 great cars it is.

The Op question was one great car or 2 not great cars. Go for the one great car.

That's what I always go by when I have enough garage... living in the city it took me literally 8 years for one out door parking spot in my complex... and 10yrs for indoor... so Suv (lease) outside... Bimmer indoors (sport/sedan)... I'd never park on the street so 2 it is... For now...

This resonates with me

thing is I don't even commute to work which means I only put about 10000 km a year on any car...I do worry that with 2 I would rarely drive my favourite car...especially if it was a 5 minute walk away (the odds of getting a spot in my condo are minimal)
