Lived in metro Detroit for 4 years, moved back to the east coast recently...plenty of stuff to do nowadays. Most areas are safe contrary to what you hear/believe. Try to hit the main stuff but my memory is foggy nowadays:

- Greektown - wahlburgers (better options but just throwing it here), casino, little strip of bars, restaurants etc.
- Downtown - cobo center, GM ren center, spirit of Detroit, woodward strip of stores/restaurants in midtown, Comerica park, ford field, Little Caesars....great generally safe and lively area. Don't venture too far off woodward or cass avenue. Cass has plenty of restaurants - tapas etc. If you are into breweries/beer, Founders opened up a spot here. Theres Motor City brewery, third street bar (or something like that), hopcat etc. etc. DIA (Detroit institute of the arts)
- Mexicantown has great food. Los coralles, los altos, los arcos are the spots I'd go to. Green dot stables as someone said is right near the ambassador bridge and def a go to.
- Eastern Market is also cool. It's similar to quincy market in boston.
- Detroit riverfront over looking the river and Windsor, Canada

In the suburbs/metro Detroit:
- Birmingham: upscale area around 14 mile/woodward
- Ferndale: 9 mile/woodward area - imperial, woodward ave brewery were my go to spots.
- Royal oak: lots of bars, clubs, restaurant
- Farmington hills/novi/downtown Plymouth to a lesser extent
- Ann arbor college town
- Dearborn: great middle eastern food. Ford's garage. (worked at Ford for 3 years)

My girl and I are big brewery fans so we went to the following:
- Founders
- Royal Oak Brewery
- Woodward Ave Brewery
- Motor city Brewery
- Hopcat
- Black lotus brewery
- Eastern Market brewery
- Detroit beer company
- Atwater brewing
- Batch brewing

As I typed this list, definitely been to a lot more places that I can't remember. Detroit/Metro Detroit is great and there is a lot of fun stuff to do and places to go despite what other people may say. Avoid areas like Pontiac, Warren, Highland Park, Oak Park, and some more. Just stick to the areas I mentioned and you are going to enjoy it.
