My dog has an aggressive Breed in her. She does not get along, for the most part with other aggressive breeds. We’ve had a few instances where other aggressive dogs were off leash and charged at my dog. On both instances I kicked the charging dogs square in the face. This worked and they retreated.

My point is....you need to be a confident pack leader for your dog and embrace that role. Which means protecting when needed. If you are not capable then rethink getting a dog.

OP listen to this guys advice. You are overthinking the situation and likely not ready to be a confident dog owner. Do like Lups says and get a hamster.

Yeah I have a 165 lb bullmastiff and have never seen another dog even try. He isn't particularly tough if you ask me but his dgaf attitude seems to ward others off. He mostly ignores dogs that freak out towards him and they just back off with all the posturing.

Side note broke another dogs leg one time with a rock when they were fighting as a kid. Felt pretty bad.

Same here, got 160lb Great Dane. Aggressive dogs leave him alone. It is always the little ones though. He just gives them a look. Most dogs and novice owners don't know what to make of him. Not a mean bone in his body thankfully. Would not want to deal with a mean Great Dane. Just watch your food...

CA self defense law is actually more ‘agressive’ then most states.

during an event o that is life threatening or great harm, you do not have the obligation to retreat, in fact CA is one of the only (if not the only) state where you can legally pursue your attacker if there is still a threat.

Good luck defending your self in court, but that is the law as i understand it.

in short if you are actually being attacked by anything, obviously try to get away, or avoid the situation in the first place, but after that do whatever you can do/need to do until the threat is over.

and you aren’t going to do anything with a 3” folding pocket knife that is probably too dull to cut a tomato

Again, why not just carry pepper spray or even bear spray when walking your dog? Where I livle, I need bear spray to begin with for...... Bears. If a pit bull or Rottweiler came after my dog while walking I'm pretty sure I'd spray the shit out of it.

Yeah... so... legally, I'm pretty sure you can kill it.

Though, stabbing it with a knife wouldn't be my first choice of attack... Dogs are pretty robust animals that have evolved to deal with puncture wounds in an attack.

I'd be hitting it with a brick or a rock until the fucker let go of your dog; and if you are going to go at it with a knife, I'd be slicing at it's neck.

At the end of the day it's quite likely you're going to have to deal with a very pissed off owner, and in the US of A; I'd expect you're going to be dealing with an armed, very pissed off owner. ... so you might want to think about that before you go cutting on some random dog.

In all seriousness, our Golden Retriever used to love a fight (he's dead now, cancer). He'd walk on the lead (on an off leash beach) and we'd keep walking when another dog came to say hello; but he wanted to assert himself as alpha male, so any unsupervised dog as big as him (40kg) that came over would always try to start a fight. It was a pain in the neck. He was a retriever, so you know - not an aggressive dog - but as I said - would say something to other dogs that made them wanted to go him. There are tactics to prevent a fight, but points 1, 2 & 3 are: keep control of your dog.

If you have good control over your own dog, its EXTREMELY UNLIKELY you're ever going to get into a situation where you need to harm another dog to break up a fight.

But if you do, a swift kick into the ribs is usually all it takes to get the other dog to loose interest and run away.

I have a bottle of high strength pepper spray permanently attached to the leash.

My thoughts are as follows...

1) I want to be able to act quickly, before my dog gets injured, and I also want to not shoot my own dog. If the other dog is on top of mine, with everything moving quickly, it could be hard to shoot it without shooting my own. On the other hand, it's not a big deal if my dog gets caught up in the pepper spray-- that's just a temporary discomfort.

2) I don't want to use a knife because I don't want to increase the risk of injury to myself. Plus, it takes time to get a knife out, unfold the blade, etc-- pepper spray is always ready to go (see 3)

3) having it attached to the leash handle, I can discretely get it fully ready for use when any questionable dog approaches, without making the owner uncomfortable-- just looks like I'm holding the leash handle.

4) no court proceedings after using it.

5) that way my wife has it every time she walks the dog, as well-- she's not super prone to concealed carrying.



.... now if a situation occurred where I had to use it, I might also shoot the attacking dog after, once the dogs had been separated, because fuck that dog-- assuming I'm out of sight of others.

The answer of "get a bigger dog" doesn't really work out, imo, as there can always be a bigger dog. Or, more specifically, more vicious dog-- and I have no desire to own/be responsible for a vicious dog.

Not a dog owner, but I can sympathize w/ the OP's question, and not fair to tell him to just get a hamster; get free local legal advice, the answer will vary by state. In both of the cities I've lived in over the past 20, it is 'cool' to take your big aggressive dog out for a walk off leash; 3 times in my life I've had a knife out and ready over this, but never had to actually use it. Sometimes the dogs are really well trained and harmless, but often more like those described above, going off on smaller dogs and cats, or humans. The fighting dog types see this as a positive trait, and some are out showing off their next contender (the opposite of what Lups is talking about - I don't mean professional trainers, I mean 'trunkers'). It is not uncommon to hear of pets being killed or seriously maimed this way.

I have a friend who is carries a billy-club sized cattle prod type thing he got at a farm and fleet store. Has only used it once, but apparently quite effective, and if it doesn't work, you have a fairly heavy metal club in hand (possibly illegal in some states?). Those ski-pole walking sticks are also handy for this type of thing. And for aozer, I'd get a picture and blow that dog into animal control - I doubt there is a city where that isn't grounds for some corrective action.

The most aggressive dogs I've seen at dog parks are german shepards. I've seen them target and attempt to kill other dogs. The pit bulls will get into it with other dogs, but I've never seen them specifically target other dogs.

My dog (border collie) is too obstinate to back down from a fight with a pit bull. The other dogs seem to back down from him before it gets rough, but I've had to pull him out of 2 scraps with pit bulls. But pit bulls are his favorite dogs to have a fun wrestle with.
