I've sold probably more ultra-short throw SONY projection setups than anyone in the country. They cost a lot, but work great. The Laser light engine really helps produce a bright and accurate image. They're very popular with high-end Manhattan condos where space is an issue; and with renters because you can easily move them to a new home.

I've used a lot of the Epson 5040 and 6040 projectors. They really are arguably the way to go for the entry level price point.... Especially when you're trying to use a 135" (diagonal) screen. 😳 Personally I'd usually prefer something more refined like a SONY HW45, but the Epson 5040 is the brightness king for entry-level HT projectors even if it is a little rough looking to a mature/experienced viewer.
Big tip for everyone... We pros call these "two-piece projection systems" for a reason... The screen is partially responsible for producing image quality.... Don't skimp on the screen! I personally like the Screen Innovations offerings. www.screeninnovations.com

Is this the same projector at a great price?
https://www.idepotmall.com/products....hoC5eoQAvD_BwE And this for the Sony? https://www.abesofmaine.com/Sony_VPL...xoC0Y8QAvD_BwE Which would you choose, and why? Last edited by 2000cs; 11-15-2018 at 11:08 AM.. |

When considering which to buy I'd first consider the following: 1. Room brightness control. Is this a south facing room with plenty of windows, or a basement room with nearly no windows? Will the room be primarily used to watch movies, or sports and television shows... Sports are more interactive and thus watched in a brighter room. A brighter room needs a brighter projector (and ambient light rejecting screen). 2. Throw distance and screen size. Longer throw distance between projector and screen; as well as screen size requires a brighter projector to achieve the same image brightness. I call this "spreading the pizza dough." The bigger you make the image (or pizza) the thinner it gets. I'd recommend 100-110" diagonal (16:9) for entry level projectors like these, but adhere to SMPTE or THX viewing distance guidelines. 3. Viewer "maturity." Is this the first home theater projector the viewer will own? Does the viewer have high-quality flat panel displays already? A mature viewer will need a more refined projector. Imperfections become more viewable as image size increases. For ME it is simple... I'd pick the SONY. The Epson looks too rough to this extremely-mature viewer, plus I have great control over my room brightness. For the average inexperienced viewer I might pick the Epson. The first thing people notice is image brightness and the Epson wins this brightness shootout. Perhaps if I were comparing these two pjs to cars I'd associate the Epson with a Mustang GT; and the SONY 45ES with a BMW M240i? 🤔

SONY VPL-295ES ($4999) or VPL-385ES ($7999). Both are true native 4K (4096 x 2160) HDR-compatible projectors. Both are basically the same PJ, but the 385 adds a dynamic iris (for potentially better contrast) and lens position memory presets (mostly used when utilizing a 2.35:1 aspect ratio screen setup for Letterbox movie content).

This is a great post thread to follow and ask about choosing the best sports projector. I am planning to setup a home theater using a sports projector because I love watching sports. But I'm still not sure what to use. So, I did research via google and I got this great article: https://www.outdoormoviehq.com/best-sports-projector/. What do you think? I had already my bet: Sony and Epson. Help me guys decide. All answers will be highly appreciated. Thanks.

Due to smallish movie room, 11x15, the Epson is my only choice for a 92" screen which I'm limited to due to all the millwork in the room. I've been looking at the 4000/4010 (best price I've seen is $1200 shipped) but every once in a while I debate myself about getting the 5040.

Ugh Home Theater is still sitting on the bottom of the projects-to-do list so hopefully prices for projectors will come down when I'm in the market for one

Tip: The new PJs are usually announced somewhere around our industry's CEDIA trade show in early September (as opposed to TVs usually being announced at CES in January).

Another great source for Epson is their own refurbished category on their website. Often times a really great proj will come at a considerable discount, having the same 2 year warranty as new. I have one and have been using it for nearly 2 years now, not one issue with it and it came looking/performing like a brand new product. |
