I've actually been pretty lucky when selling my toys and broke even or made money. I made a few dollars on that car but not that kind of cash. I'll see if I can find a picture of it and post it up.....

For me it depends on the car. I'm too young to have changed cars often but my dad did - I remember being actually sad when he sold our 2004 A6 but wasn't sad at all to see the CLS go... When the first car I ever drove was going I was kinda sad and so was my friends, when the Nissan went to be replaced by the F10 I was ecstatic to see it leave

I've never been as emotional as OP and some others about the 1 car I've parted w/ but I get the sentiment. My old car was BULLETPROOF, in fact, the only thing that broke was the 3rd party stereo that came w/ it as OEM. Sucks to part w/ something when there's nothing wrong w/ it, so I get it.

I'll throw a party when the CLS is gone. SUPERB Engine, exhaust, & rear-end aside, it just fails horribly on the comfort & suspension aspect.

I was attached to my old E36 M3 (1995). Now, I just don’t think about it cause cars can suck money out of you. Rather have investment ina real estate and drive a new car every 3 years.

I miss my Z4 Roadster, but it really wasn't getting the attention it deserved once my commute went from 110 miles r/t to 6 miles r/t. But it was a feast for the eyes and fun to drive. If I lived somewhere where the roads had actual curves, I might have kept it.

Funny OP UPDATE

1 week later and I’m trading in my 2016 435 on a 2019 X5 today ... and am happier than a pig in $Hit cleaning and clearing this one out. It’s been a perfect car, showroom new, drives great but I just can’t wait to get it gone.

I can happily conclude that it’s the car for me and not some kind of car-hoarding-disorder for me.

If someone keeps a car for 15 years and drives it lots and makes lots of great memories YES they will have attachment and get sad selling it on...

If someone has a car that is "like new" and deletes some software profiles and gets sad; it likely represents emotional problems.

This is partly why I can't get rid of my E90. In 2009 we went as a family to the dealership to buy a new silver on black 3-series. There was a beautiful black on terra (orange/brown) 3er sitting in the center of the showroom which was such a sexier color combination. It was loaded with everything besides Nav.

We fell in love immediately and my dad knew he had to have it. We took her home and eventually he gave the car to me. 10 yrs old and 70k miles and has been maintained immaculately its entire life. It's like a family heirloom at this point.

The biggest reason I won't part with it is because nobody makes such a great car anymore. The driving experience shits on any modern car thanks to the sublime classic BMW steering feel. And the interior is just insanely high quality, not to mention very sexy with that Terra colored interior and Burl wood.


My other car is a Lexus IS which while no E90 BMW, is still reasonably fun to drive and has a nice enough interior. It has been with me through a very difficult recent 3.5 years. I've had the most ups and downs of my life during this period. I will get rid of it in about 3 yrs time but the memories I've shared with it will hang around forever.

It really hurt me when my ‘15 M3 was dragged away to be scrapped earlier this year. It was my first (and only) ED and I had been through a lot with that car. The shortcomings of my supposed-to-be-identical ‘18 makes the loss even more apparent.

My incoming M550 will only be my fourth car ever.

First was a POS Nissan XE that was fine until someone turned in front of me and totaled it. Only had that one for a couple years and I was 17 so whatever.

Second was a '94 Dodge Dakota Club Cab. Thing was a tank. Everything that could be done in that car by a high school/college/mid-20s kid...it was done. Installed aftermarket sound on my own and it sounded great but was ugly as hell. By the time the fourth alternator and third radiator were going out at the same time, I decided its time had come. Had it towed to the local fire academy where I was invited to watch them set it ablaze and practice jaws of life. We did the same with my wife's Ford Contour when it started failing. Nice tax write off, too.

Current car is an '03 4Runner. Completely stock except for a new stereo/speakers just installed last year. Running over 230k miles with no end in sight. The biggest repair I've had to make (touch wood) is replacing some worn out CV boots, and those were cheaper than a new set of tires. Every time I get it serviced, the techs tell me they see these things running around at twice my mileage with no issues. Have been through blizzards, kids, engagement, marriage, grad school, four or five moves, mud pits, creeks, and plenty of back roads and rainy days with it. It even towed the Dakota and Contour to the fire academy and helped build our house (literally - took it to pick up appliances and materials). Whenever it happens, this one will be a tough one to set on fire.

All she wanted was gasoline and withstood so much of my abuse in the relationship. i drove her with metal on rotors for probably 5k miles. i left my all my baggage(food trash) in her and she never complained. Whereas my M3 acts like a temperamental child when its tires are below 50% tread

Seems like a good spot for the required “1st post” since I recently lost my 2011 X3. Totaled in an accident, signing it over for salvage was like taking the dog on his last hunting trip.

I miss my first E46 a lot and thinking about it frequently. I liked it more than my E92, aside from the power and a few features. Getting rid of the E92 hurt a lot, but with a growing family, a coupe isn't exactly practical.

I think being sad when a car leaves is normal for any gearhead.

The only cars I miss are the BMW's I've traded off. Everything else was a stain by comparison.

Though BMW has supposedly screwed up the current generation compared to the older cars by insulating us more and more from the driving experience, even the run of the mill X3 loaner I get when my ZCP is in for service is more enjoyable than a lot of what passes for cars these days.

I'm the same way about the Celica I drive when visiting my cousins in Europe

Absolutely brutalize that thing & it just kept going.
