As far as I know BMW sued the shipping company and its an ongoing legal battle so thats why these cars remained untouched in that yard. That's the only explanation that makes sense to me.

If, by chance, you may have wandered over to the ADESA salvage yard in Vancouver, British Columbia anytime over the last four years, you would have discovered a field of nearly 3,000 seemingly brand-new BMW and Mini models parked bumper to bumper, just rotting away.
A reader who sent Jalopnik photos of the cars in the salvage yard has done exactly that a few times over the last couple of years, and every time the cars appear a little sadder.

Back in February of 2015, a rough winter storm rocked Halifax port just as a fresh shipment of 2014 and 2015 model year BMW and Mini cars had arrived, as reported at the time by CBC.

Due to the extensive "exposure to standing water and salt for an extended period," Transport Canada—the transportation regulatory department of the Canadian government—issued a recall for the 2,966 vehicles in port affected by the storm back in 2015.
The cars have been sitting at ADESA Vancouver, a salvage auction yard, ever since. According to the official recall, the Mini models were determined to be at increased risk of crash due to "corrosion at the starter motor power supply cable connectors, which could lead to the inability to restart the engine following an engine shutdown by the start-stop (MSA) system."
The same recall determined the BMW models were at increased risk of crash because "lubrication of some internal components within the steering rack may have been exposed to excessive water or salt which could result in higher than normal steering effort or steering binding."

The recall also warned of damage to electrical wires and connectors in the cars. The list of models affected included the BMW 2 Series, 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, 6 Series, 7 Series, i3 electric hatch, i8 electric coupe, X1 crossover, Z4 roadster, Mini Cooper, Cooper Convertible, Coupe, Mini Paceman, and Mini Roadster.
This week, BMW of Canada sent Jalopnik the following statement in response to the situation:
While we cannot confirm without seeing individual VINs, it appears that the vehicles pictured may be among those involved in the Port of Halifax recall.
This recall was implemented in conjunction with Transport Canada. It was issued due to risks relating to the exposure of certain vehicles to excessive standing water or salt for an extended period of time at the port of entry in Halifax in 2015.
It was deemed that this exposure could result in a number of issues including, for example, damage to electrical systems.
All vehicles subject to the recall were removed from service. BMW and MINI retailers worked with affected customers to replace their vehicle with a new vehicle as quickly as possible.
The photos Luke sent to Jalopnik show some M models, including an M4 and a few M6s. That's a lot of good car just sitting there going to waste. Why hasn't somebody started a spec salvage racing series with these yet? Can we try
Send them to Eastern Europe

If I remember correctly, don't these units eventually have to be destroyed? They're technically unsafe to drive and any parts that you could get from them are either outdated or ruined from the moisture.

I'd be curious to see if the units can have all the harmful parts taken out and use the shells to make artificial reefs. They've done that with decommissioned NYC subway cars over the years.

This is human stupidity at high level.
Use costly resources to build some very expensive cars that by some poor and lack of realism judgement can not be used?
What a stupid thinking.
We use cars that posed a risk for safety and environment 10 years ago and they are still on the streets today.
All this is nothing to do with reality or safety. Is all about money money and money.

So I called ADESA Vancouver.. the VERY nice gal on the phone laughed and said yes, she has had a TON of phone calls just like mine.

Zero info, they dont have any info on what is going on with the cars, or what could be done with them. She said that they are asking for status, so they can provide it, but no window of time for updates or way to get it other than call them.

There is a financial aspect to this problem. It does cost money to store these cars. Not all facts are known at this point.

Regardless ... these pictures are quite sad.

No because the fear (from BMW) is that the cars will be cleaned and sold with rebuilt titles and some unsuspecting person won't know the car is not factory fresh. There would be no warranty. When something fails, regardless if someone gets hurt, they could be open to lawsuits and bad PR. They would rather just write it all off and avoid the hassle as that's what the insurance is for.

So the storage company says not all cars are bad.
BMW says all cars are bad (not even fully examining)

I would sign an agreement with BMW and take one with a chance!
I would happily pay the price after depreciation + salvage

It's possible to buy them when it goes on auction. It would truly be Bring A Trailer!

When Dieselgate happened, VW put all those returned VWs in a desert. At least dry climate help preserve the vehicles. Out in temperate rainforest Vancouver.... these BMWs will not have a chance.

You can probably just wash off most of the dirt and they will be like new. It hasn't been long enough for them to rust through. Can also be salvaged for parts. The fixes that caused the recall don't seem to be hard to fix so not sure why they didn't just fix them.
